Sony Refusing to Refund Some Copies of Cyberpunk 2077 | Game Rant

Cyberpunk 2077 has been without a doubt one, if not the most anticipated game of 2020. And after being originally announced in May 2012, the finally game released last week on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, after almost a decade of development.

All eyes were on developer CD Projekt Red as the game experienced multiple delays earlier this year, first being delayed from this April to September, then to November, and finally to this December. While Cyberpunk 2077 sold incredibly well on PC and was met with critical acclaim, some gamers who anticipated playing the game on consoles couldn’t help but notice that the developer seemingly never disclosed footage of the game running on either PS4 or Xbox One, only ever showing footage of the game running on PC.

Unfortunately, Cyberpunk 2077‘s release last week ended up proving much of the skepticism held by console gamers, as it almost seemed that players of the game on PC and players of the game on consoles were having two completely different experiences. This led to CD Projekt Red issuing an apology today, offering refunds to those playing Cyberpunk 2077 on consoles. However, despite CD Projekt Red promising refunds to disappointed gamers, Sony has reportedly refused refunds to those who purchased the digital PS4 version of the game.

On Twitter, many users have expressed frustration with being denied a refund of their digital purchase of Cyberpunk 2077 for PS4, posting screenshots of their PlayStation customer support conversations. PlayStation customer support representatives have reportedly referred to the PlayStation Store Cancellation Policy, stating that the game cannot be refunded if it has been downloaded or streamed. What may be even worse, however, is that some PlayStation customer support representatives have seemingly tried to sway customers away from urging for a refund, acknowledging Cyberpunk 2077‘s issues on consoles, but citing CD Projekt Red’s announcement that patches for the console versions of Cyberpunk 2077 are on the way.

While it may be worth mentioning that CD Projekt Red offered for any customers struggling to get a refund to contact them directly at a special email address, there’s no denying CD Projekt Red’s oversight of the PlayStation Store Cancellation Policy, as it referred purchasers of the digital PS4 version of Cyberpunk 2077 to use the PSN refund system. And although Cyberpunk 2077 has experienced a variety of bugs on all platforms, its disappointing debut on consoles has been what has left many gamers with a sour taste in their mouths.

While fully optimized versions of Cyberpunk 2077 for next-gen consoles have yet to be released, CD Projekt Red has guaranteed that those who purchased the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game will receive free next-gen upgrades. It will be interesting to see how many gamers decide to wait on either the next-gen upgrades or the upcoming patches for Cyberpunk 2077 before attempting to refund their console versions of the game.

Cyberpunk 2077 is available now on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions coming in 2021.
