Yesterday, Grand Theft Auto Online received its newest update, which added more weapons, vehicles, and a new heist mission to the game (which Rockstar describes as being the biggest adventure yet) set in the new locale of Cayo Perico, a private island paradise.
The prospect of a whole new area to explore is certainly reason enough to be excited and early impressions from fans suggested that the Cayo Perico update was becoming a quick favorite (the surprise Dr. Dre cameo, in particular, seemed to be a highlight). But, some players appear to have soured on the update upon realizing that they can’t actually explore Cayo Perico.
For whatever reason, players can not freely roam the island and it is only accessible when taking part in the heist missions. To be fair to Rockstar, it never explicitly said that such a feature would be included, but this information has only been revealed upon playing the new update.
At the time of writing, Rockstar hasn’t stated why this is, though some theorize that it could be to prevent griefing (where players deliberately harass others and spoil their gameplay sessions in-game) or so it wouldn’t have to split its player-base across two different maps.
Whatever the reason, Grand Theft Auto Online players are expressing their disappointment on social media. It’s always possible that Rockstar will make the island fully explorable at a later date, but it hasn’t officially confirmed that and is merely a hope at this point.
Following this new update, it almost feels like the player-base is becoming more and more divided over its feelings towards the game. While there are still plenty who are continuing to enjoy it for what it is, as well as the new content, others have been losing interest (Twitch streamer Shroud even considers it to be a flop) and would much rather see Grand Theft Auto 6.
Though it hasn’t been officially confirmed, everyone knows that Grand Theft Auto 6 will be a thing and is likely being worked on right now. But Rockstar has not shared any information about it, with fans instead relying on rumors, theories, and potential teases to get by.
At the moment, Rockstar’s next known projects are the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S re-releases of Grand Theft Auto 5 and Grand Theft Auto Online, both of which are scheduled for 2021, with the latter very much suggesting that Rockstar isn’t slowing down support for the online title any time soon.
Grand Theft Auto Online is available for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions also in development.
