Fresh news about the Resident Evil movie reboot seems to shamble in at a steady clip, much like the zombies that have come to define the popular video game franchise that its based off of. This time its a new release date that’s busted through the shuffle of leaked set photos and casting announcements to give this movie’s journey to release an end date.
Those familiar with the Resident Evil games understand that convoluted puzzles are an integral part of the experience and it took a bit of detective work to decipher the release date — September 9, 2021. The website for the German film production company Constantin Film lists the release date on a webpage under its site for the movie, which online sleuthers noticed. It’s the same type of detective work that led to leaked photos from set that greased the wheels of speculation about what the movie may try and recreate from the games.
The Resident Evil reboot isn’t the first attempt at turning the Resident Evil franchise into movies. Mila Jovovich starred in six movies bearing the franchise name, but those films barely held a connection to the video games. The movie reboot is intent to tell the story every Resident Evil video game player is familiar with and that has brought a different kind of hype to the production of this film.
Now the release date gleaned from the Constantin Film website isn’t set in stone for COVID-19 has made everything fluid, but it gives everyone interested in this project something to look forward too.
What is definitive about the Resident Evil reboot are the people involved. Horror/Thriller director Johannes Roberts will be at the helm with many iconic characters from the game already cast. Robbie Amell plays Chris Redfield and Kaya Scodelario plays his sister Claire. Hannah John-Kamen plays the tough-as-nails Jill Valentine and Avan Jogia is set to appear as the protagonist of the Resident Evil 2 video game Leon Kennedy. Rounding out the villains are Tom Hopper as Albert Wesker.
The Resident Evil reboot is supposed to follow the plot of Resident Evil 1 and 2, which are two of the strongest titles in the series. The details coming out about the movie right now point to an earnest attempt in recreating what made the experience in both of those video games iconic.
The Resident Evil movie reboot will release on September 9, 2021.
