Anyone wanting to try Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War‘s multiplayer will two opportunities to do so this month. Activision has confirmed that it is making Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War‘s multiplayer free to play for a limited time, giving players access to a selection of modes and content to give them a taste of what the full game has to offer.
The first Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War multiplayer free week starts today and ends on December 21. It gives players access to the 2v2 Gunfight mode, which was just added to the game as part of the big Season 1 update. Players can also play the Domination and Team Deathmatch game modes, as well as check out a couple of featured playlists. The featured playlists for the first period of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War multiplayer free wee are Nuketown Holiday 24/7, a Christmas-themed variant of the popular Nuketown map, as well as Raid the Mall, which features The Pines and Raid maps.
Immediately after the first Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War free multiplayer period ends, another one will start up that runs from December 21 to December 24, with different content available. For the second part of the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War free multiplayer period, players can try the fan favorite Prop Hunt game mode, Combined Arms: Hardpoint, and Fireteam: Dirty Bomb. Clearly, the first free multiplayer period is to let fans try traditional multiplayer, whereas the second period is focused on larger-scale game modes and maps.
Call of Duty has a long history of offering limited-time access to its multiplayer, and so it’s not surprising to see the practice continue with Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. It’s something that Activision to do to try to convince people who have yet to purchase the new game to take the plunge. Though now that Warzone is tied to Black Ops Cold War as well, perhaps many more players will be making the jump sooner rather than later.
For players to get the full value out of the latest Call of Duty: Warzone Battle Pass, they will need to have Black Ops Cold War purchased. This is because all of the content unlocked in the Battle Pass can be used in both the battle royale and standard multiplayer.
Not only that, but Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War weapons are now in Warzone as well, so battle royale fans can use the standard multiplayer to level up their guns faster, in turn giving them quicker access to attachments they need to make the best loadouts possible for the battle royale.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
