Some may have already seen Sophia in official promotional art for Persona 5 Strikers. She is an AI that can only take a human form while in the Metaverse. Outside in the real world, however, she lives in Joker’s phone and uses it to communicate.
In battle, she uses giant twin yo-yos as her melee weapon and blasters as her ranged weapon. Her initial Persona is Pithos of the Hope Arcana, which is known in Greek Mythology as the proper name of Pandora’s box.
Sophia is initially found by Joker, Morgana, and Ryuji in the game’s first jail while she is in the form of a giant box. However, she then takes the form of a young girl and develops her own Persona after encountering a group of shadows. Being a new member of the Phantom Thieves, despite being an AI, Sophia takes on the code name of Sophie.
After leaving the metaverse, Sophia reveals that she has no memories except for the fact that she is humanity’s friend. Her AI is considered so complicated that Futaba Sakura can’t decipher her within a short time period.
As players go through the story, it becomes very clear that Sophia is related to the EMMA app that has been brainwashing the public. Sophia can even telepathically communicate with the EMMA AI, cementing their relationship.
Zenkichi Hasegawa is a police officer from Kyoto with a young daughter named Akane. After the Phantom Thieves come to Kyoto, he awakens to his Persona, Valjean of the Priest arcana. Valjean is named after the main protagonist of the famous book and musical Les Miserables. Once Zenkichi becomes a Phantom Thief, he takes on the code name of Wolf. He additionally uses two-handed swords in battle as well as dual revolvers for long-range attacks.
The story behind Zenkichi Hasegawa involves his wife who was killed in a drunk driving accident by an associate of Masayoshi Shido from the original Persona 5. Due to these connections, Zenkichi was pressured to drop the case as the culprit threatened to call a hit on Zenkichi’s daughter. This however would cause Akane to become more emotionally distant from him over the years.
After Akane becomes the creator of Kyoto’s Jail in the metaverse, Zenkichi awakens to his Persona out of a desire to protect his family. He uses his new abilities to save the Phantom Thieves and uses his new resolve to bring his wife’s killer to justice.
Persona 5 Strikers will release for Nintendo Switch, PC, and PlayStation 4 on February 23rd.
