Jeff Kaplan Gives Small Development Update On Overwatch 2

Overwatch 2 is an exciting prospect to those who missed out on the launch of the original game or those who are looking for a fresh start. However, updates on the development of Overwatch 2 have been scarce in recent months, making Jeff Kaplan’s brief teaser exciting for those hoping to see more of the game.

While the popular and heavily-memed Jeff Kaplan is likely going to be suiting up for another Overwatch Yule Log soon, he took the time to address just how quiet Blizzard has been on the Overwatch sequel. The game director speaks for the entirety of Blizzard when he tells fans that “we know it’s been too long,” adding that the team knows they’ve “been quiet” about the progress made on the next entry in the Overwatch franchise. Thankfully, Kaplan did provide confirmation for when the game will be seen again.

During the developer update for Overwatch’s new free-for-all map Kanezaka, Kaplan confirmed that the team’s “focus is Overwatch 2” and that they are “excited to talk” more about it. As confirmed by Kaplan himself, players will be given news about the game “in February, at the very latest.” While Jeff Kaplan has left the door open for the game to be discussed prior to release, players should expect more Overwatch 2 information at the month specifically highlighted by Kaplan: February.

The February info drop for Overwatch 2 makes perfect sense, as BlizzCon takes place on February 19 of next year. The special online version of BlizzCon will allow the Overwatch team to go in depth with the upcoming sequel, showing off gameplay and features as well as story updates. The perfect stage for more info to be given, BlizzCon is where players should set their sights on when it comes to Overwatch 2 news.

While it is unclear if the next big discussion on Overwatch 2 will provide players with a release date for the game, Kaplan has confirmed that it will still be a while before players are enjoying the Overwatch follow-up. According to the game director, him and the team “still have a ways to go” on the project, though they are “working extremely hard” to get the game in the hands of fans in a timely manner. Jeff Kaplan ends his short Overwatch 2 update by saying, “we want this game to be great for you, both the live game and the sequel.”

While Overwatch 2 will  certainly not be making its rumored 2020 release date, at least fans now have confirmation that more of the game will be seen in February. Until then, players can kill the time with Overwatch‘s ongoing Winter Wonderland event, freezing each other in the new brawl and unlocking some festive skins.

Overwatch 2 is in development for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
