Kevin Hart May Be Playing a Fan Favorite Character in the Borderlands Movie

For those out of the loop: yes, there is an official Borderlands movie in the works based on the hit video games by Gearbox Software. The project is currently set to be directed by Eli Rothand while not much has been revealed of the plot details, it is known that Cate Blanchett is currently signed on to play Lilith, suggesting that the story of the movie will likely be an adaptation of the main games, and not a spin-off or alternate interpretation. Not much else had been revealed until recently, when reports indicated that Kevin Hart would be signing on to play Roland, one of the other major characters from the series.

Released all the way back in 2009, the original Borderlands was the arguably the first major game to define itself as a “looter shooter:” a shooting game based around constantly finding new guns and weapons to experiment with against a variety of enemies. Of course, in the first game, this mechanic was front and center, and the story took something of a backseat. The player can choose any of the four playable characters, which included Roland and Lilith, and would explore the world of Pandora. Pandora is a lawless planet filled with freaks and weirdos, and the main characters are in search of “The Vault,” a legendary cache hidden by someone or something that is rumored to contain some sort of valuable treasure.

In Borderlands, though, the main characters are mostly player avatars, and have little characterization beyond their designs. They rarely even speak in game. It was Borderlands 2 where Roland and Lilith in particular became fleshed out characters, giving them an actual role in the story as they fought against the villain Handsome Jack, who sought to impose his iron will on Pandora. While Borderlands is undoubtedly a comedy game, Roland himself isn’t really a comedic character, being a more stoic leader type. That makes Kevin Hart an interesting choice, as it suggests they may be tweaking some of the characters to better fit the adapted screenplay.

There hasn’t been any official reveal of what the story will look like, but it’s a pretty safe bet that it will be some combination of Borderlands and Borderlands 2. The former because it sets the stage for the world and introduces the central premise, and the second because it has a lot more in the way of character motivations and memorable moments. Hopefully there will be more news soon, and perhaps an official confirmation on whether or not Kevin Hart really is joining the Vault Hunters on their latest adventure.

The Borderlands movie is in development.
