Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Reveals Sephiroth Release Date

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fans were shocked when The Game Awards debuted Sephiroth as the next DLC character, and his recent showcase has brought that excitement to even higher levels. Very few players expected Final Fantasy 7 (or Final Fantasy at all for that matter) to get a second representative, but for the most part everyone seems excited about the addition.

While the main focus of this showcase was to give fans an idea of what to expect from Sephiroth as a fighter, it also had the added benefit of revealing his release date as well. As it happens, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fans don’t have to wait too long before online lobbies are filled with Sephiroth duos, as the One Winged Angel releases on December 23rd.

Of course, like other new character releases, players should expect to see an influx of Sephiroths when playing online. Tournaments will likely be filled with him for a while, and YouTube Smash players are probably going to be talking about and playing him a lot. Even offline, players will have a brand new spirit board, stage, classic mode, and music to enjoy.

As many had already pieced together from a breakdown of Sephiroth’s reveal trailer, the new fighter is capable of fighting at very long ranges. Spacing will be very important to Sephiroth players, as his attacks have sweet spots and one of his greatest strengths is being able to keep enemies at a safe distance while still dealing heavy damage. His special attacks also provide a wide range of utility, with his counter offering up a defensive option to deal with enemies that get too close and his side special helping to apply pressure on opponents.

Alongside all this, Nintendo also revealed brand new Mii Fighter costumes, including ones based on Square Enix characters such as Geno and Barrett. Tifa, Aerith, and the Chocobo hat will also be available, proving this DLC pack to be Final Fantasy fans’ dream come true. Unfortunately, that does deconfirm Geno as a DLC character, but at least he’s in the game in some capacity.

While the showcase was very informative, players won’t truly get to see just how powerful Sephiroth is until they can play him for themselves. How well Sephiroth is able to handle the diverse array of fighters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will be interesting to find out, as his reveal trailer made him look incredibly strong compared to all the others. Shockingly, players can actually play Sephiroth early if they manage to beat his boss battle, so those that have already purchased the character should get to work on that soon.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available now on Switch.
