Wonder Boy Asha in Monster World is the newest entry in Sega’s long-running Wonder Boy series coming to Nintendo Switch and PS4. Wonder Boy Asha in Monster World was announced via IGN back in August, with the full reveal and announcement taking place later that week during Gamescom.
The Wonder Boy series came back into the spotlight in 2016 with Wonder Boy Returns, a remake of the original Wonder Boy title released all the way back in 1986. Now, the fourth entry in the series following its return, Wonder Boy Asha in Monster World, is confirmed to be launching for PS4 and Switch sometime in 2021.
The Wonder Boy series started in video arcades, later moving on to Sega consoles like the Master System and Mega Drive. Unfortunately, the series fell off after Wonder Boy 4 released in 1994 on the Sega Mega Drive. Now, Wonder Boy Asha in Monster World serves as a remake to Wonder Boy 4, complete with totally revamped graphics among other new elements. Additionally, multiple members of the original development team are returning for this remake, including the creator of the Wonder Boy series, Ryuichi Nishizawa.
The modern Wonder Boy remake titles found success on the PS4 in 2016. However, their eventual release on the Nintendo Switch was another boon for the series thanks to the Switch’s growing indie development scene. Last month, Sega confirmed it was interested in remakes and remasters for its various properties across different platforms. Hopefully, Wonder Boy Asha in Monster World is just one of many Sega properties that get the remake treatment throughout 2021 and beyond.
