Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War was in need of a balance update as the recent meta had been dominating the multiplayer experience. Prior to the release of Season 1, the developers have nerfed two pivotal weapons that have been driving the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War meta for weeks.
While several things were fixed in the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War December 15th patch, two weapons underwent a significant change. The M16 and AUG tactical rifles had been dominating the battlefield, but now they have adjusted stats that players are unable to compensate for. While the weapons are not useless, they are definitely not the apex predators that they once were.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War nerf has reduced the maximum effective range and fire rate of the M16. This reduces its ability to longshot players easily and extends the time between kills. As many builds for the M16 revolved around optimizing around these two factors, the nerf has brought the M16 back into balance with other weapons of a similar category. Alongside the M16, the AUG has also received a nerf that impacts its headshot multiplier, maximum effective range, and fire rate. As a minor nerf to both guns, the 19.8″ Task Force barrel attachment has also been balanced by reducing the damage increase that it used to provide for tactical rifles.
The goal of the developer is to try and shake up the competitive meta for the Christmas season. By shifting weapon balancing around, new players can enter the game under a more fair pretense than before. Treyarch did nerf more than just the two tactical rifles in the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War update, as shotguns, assault rifles, and other weapons received a scattering of nerfs and buffs.
The two shotguns in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War received a nerf, as the Hauer 77 and Gallo SA12 both received damage reductions. The AK-47 received a slight nerf alongside the Krig 6, but the FFAR 1 got a much-needed buff helping to balance out the assault rifle class. The Milano, KSP, and Bullfrog SMGs have a higher effective damage range, and the M60 LMG gained increased ADS and weapon swap speed.
As a much-needed slap to the meta, the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Flak Jacket perk did receive a nerf during this patch. Several perks were adjusted, but at least now Flak Jacket players can be killed by explosives once again.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
