Although Control Ultimate Edition originally launched earlier this year, its promised next-generation upgrade didn’t make the leap alongside it, with Remedy bumping the ports to next year. Today, the team finally unveiled when players will be able to upgrade their versions of Control to fully embrace the next-gen systems, with the game set to hit PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X in just a few months’ time.
To be precise, the enhanced version of Remedy Games‘ 2019 gem will appear on Sony and Microsoft’s digital storefronts on February 2, with a physical version coming a month later on March 3. A short gameplay teaser showcases that the new port will have two modes: a 60 FPS performance mode and a 30 FPS “graphics” mode, which trades the smoother frame rate for enhanced visuals and ray-tracing.
The short teaser provided alongside the announcement showcases protagonist Jesse Faden walking through the hallways of The Oldest House in 60 FPS before turning and looking at a window. The player then hits the pause button, shifts to the display menu, and selects graphics mode. Unpausing the game, the window Jesse is facing is suddenly made reflective by the added raytracing effects, showcasing what a major difference they’ll make to the overall visual quality of the game.
For those wondering whether they’re entitled to the game’s next-generation facelift, users will have to have purchased a copy of Control Ultimate Edition to be able to gain access to the ports. The choice was a controversial one to fans of the game, many of which had purchased the original title as well as both its Foundation and AWE DLCs at full price when they launched. In the months since, the company has adamantly stuck to its guns on players needing the Ultimate Edition to hop into the game on Xbox Series X or PlayStation 5, refusing to budge on the matter despite the ensuing backlash.
Regardless, it seems Control won’t be the only game getting a next-generation update next year. Cyberpunk 2077 will allegedly be receiving a port to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X in the near future, alongside Doom Eternal, Marvel’s Avengers, and Ghostrunner. For those who never played Control when it debuted last year, the game follows Jesse Faden, a regular civilian turned head of a paranormal government agency after stumbling upon the corpse of the previous director. Players are tasked with exploring the agency’s base of operations, The Oldest House, and discovering its secrets, all the while dealing with the sinister invasion of a series of malevolent entities known as The Hiss.
Control is out now on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, with its PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X ports slated to arrive on February 2, 2021.
