The Epic Games Store is currently in the midst of its annual Winter Sale, offering discount prices on titles such as Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Immortals Fenyx Rising, and Red Dead Redemption 2. Alongside the sale, the company has also started its 15 Days of Free Games event, with players getting access to a new title free of charge every 24 hours.
Cities: Skylines kicked off the Christmas event yesterday, but with a full day having now passed since the title was up for grabs, it has been cycled out for Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty. The 2D platformer will officially be available to claim until 8 AM PT tomorrow, at which point it will be replaced by a mysterious new free title of Epic Games’ choosing.
Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty originally released back in 2015 and is a remake of Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee that dropped back in 1997. The story takes place in the titular realm of Oddworld, with players taking on the role of Abe, a member of an alien species known as the Mudokons. The story centers around Abe discovering that the meat-packing plant he works at has plans to serve Mudokon slaves as meat to its customers, with the protagonist having to escape the plant and aid in the rescue of his fellow workers.
The release of the game for free on The Epic Games Store comes just at the right time, with the long-running Oddworld series slated to receive a new entry next year. Oddworld: Soulstorm will be a continuation of the plot of New ‘n’ Tasty, serving as a reimagining of Abe’s Oddysee’s original follow-up Abe’s Exoddus. Soulstorm is said to be a complete retake of Exoddus’ narrative, with modern hardware allowing the developers to create a fresh and original take on Oddworld’s seminal 2D side-scrolling gameplay. Its most recent showcase came at The Game Awards, with the studio behind Soulstorm highlighting its striking visuals and more of its puzzle-platforming gameplay.
The Epic Games Store’s 15 Days of Free Games event will continue tomorrow, with another free title slated to take Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty’s spot once the 24-hour countdown comes to an end. The developer held a similar event last year, offering 12-days of gifts rather than the buffed up 15-day extravaganza currently going on at the marketplace. During the event, the publisher dropped the likes of Yooka-Laylee and the Forgotten Lair, Superhot, Ape Out, Celeste, and Hello Neighbor. With Cities Skylines and Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty starting off this year’s celebration, it’ll be interesting to see what other titles crop up for free on the storefront over the next 13 days.
Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty is out now on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
