Netflix continues its quest to fund as many original shows as possible with the announcement of yet another deal signed and sealed. The Streamer has officially picked up Locke & Key for a third season, while also getting c0-showrunner Meredith Averill to commit to several other future projects.
Based on the comics by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodríguez, Locke & Key is a supernatural drama starring three siblings whose father is murdered under mysterious circumstances. Together, they discover a series of magical keys related to their father’s death, as well as strange powers and a mysterious demon who threatens to take them away. The show was renewed for its second season a month after the premiere on Netflix, and the third season has been commissioned as production on season two is just wrapping up.
This renewal means that the third season of Locke & Key will begin filming as soon as 2021 rolls around. At the very least it suggests that Netflix is confident in the show’s second season and wants to commit to the series for a longer run than it gave to the Dark Crystal reboot, for example. Averill signing on for other projects is also an interesting development, but nothing has been announced or teased regarding what they may be working on in the future. Regardless it seems Averill will have quite a bit of job security on Netflix originals for the foreseeable future.
Carlton Cuse and Meredith Averill will continue as showrunners for Locke & Key, and will no doubt continue to bring the same energy and passion that has allowed the show to find an appreciative audience. In the meantime, Netflix and Averill will likely be working on several other projects behind the scenes, which will no doubt be given a proper announcement once they are in a state where they can be properly shown off.
This is an especially interesting renewal for Netflix, which has canceled numerous original series after their second seasons. Quite a few projects and series have met an untimely end, leaving viewers wondering what shows Netflix might cancel next. Hopefully, it continues to meet the quality bar expected from the streaming service while also providing the experience that fans of the show and the comics want.
