Super Smash Bros. Ultimate recently announced its next DLC fighter coming to the game following Minecraft’s Steve. Sephiroth is Smash Ultimate’s next DLC fighter, as revealed during The Game Awards 2020 live stream event.
Sephiroth’s announcement took fans completely by surprise following the stunning CGI reveal trailer, which also briefly showcased how the character would play in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Now, following the Sephiroth-focused Smash Direct presentation, players will have the opportunity to unlock Sephiroth five full days before his official release on December 22.
The news came at the tail-end of the recent Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct hosted by the game’s director, Masahiro Sakurai. During the event, Sakurai showcased exactly how Sephiroth will play in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, putting the character’s move set on display. Players also learned Sephiroth’s official release date, being Tuesday, December 22. However, players who have purchased the Fighter Pass Vol. 2 or Sephiroth individually can unlock the character today after completing a special challenge.
Players can play a special, limited-time mode that can be accessed from the main menu, where players can fight Sephiroth as a boss character. Players have the option to choose between three separate difficulties for the fight: Easy, Normal, and Very Hard. If players are able to beat Sephiroth, they can unlock him and the brand new Northern Cave stage early. This is something that hasn’t been done for any of Smash Ultimate’s previous Fighter Pass characters, let alone for the entire series.
During Sephiroth’s showcase live stream, Sakurai mentioned that the team initially wanted the challenge to have much higher stakes. If players challenged Sephiroth and beat him, they would be able to unlock him and use him as they can now. However, if players lost to Sephiroth after challenging him, they would not be able to use him until the official release date of December 22 rolled around. Sakurai wanted this mode to challenge players who chose the “Very Hard” difficulty, but the idea was ultimately scrapped in favor of the current challenge. Instead, it appears players can challenge Sephiroth in Smash Ultimate as many times as they need to, provided they purchased the proper DLC options.
While it would have been a very cool challenge for Smash Ultimate players, it’s natural that Sakurai wouldn’t want to exclude certain players based on their skill level. The Sephiroth Challenge will be available from December 17 until December 22, when Sephiroth is fully released. There were a handful of other announcements in the presentation, including Final Fantasy 7 Mii Fighter costumes resembling Barret, Tifa, and Aerith. Players should look forward to all the Final Fantasy love coming to Super Smash Bros Ultimate in the next few days, and those skilled enough can hopefully enjoy playing as Sephiroth early.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available now for the Nintendo Switch.
