Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Sephiroth Kirby is Hit with Fans

Since The Game Awards 2020 last week, most Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fans have been hyped to see Final Fantasy 7’s Sephiroth coming to the game, bringing one of gaming’s most iconic villains to Nintendo’s increasingly-ambitious crossover fighter. However, a contender has risen up this weekend to challenge Sephiroth for the hype crown, that contender being “Sephiroth Kirby.”

There’s always a lot to look forward to whenever a new fighter is added to Smash Bros. Ultimate. Aside from the character themselves, the game also receives a new stage, new music, and usually new Mii Fighter costumes, but amid all of this, one of the things players are always excited to see is the new look Kirby receives after swallowing and copying the new fighter. And with how ingrained Sephiroth is into the history of video games, many fans have been particularly eager to see what the One Winged Angel version of Kirby looks like.

In the wake of Masahiro Sakurai’s breakdown of Smash Bros. Ultimate’s Sephiroth DLC yesterday, Nintendo has delivered just that, showing off multiple screenshots of Kirby sporting Sephiroth’s silver hair on social media, complete with a joking comment about the challenge Kirby will have to face having to maintain that distinct hairdo.

Due to the inherent absurdity of one of gaming’s most infamous villains being cosplayed by an adorable pink puffball, Sephiroth Kirby has already received a warm welcome within the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate community. Following Nintendo’s original posts, fans have been contributing with several comments of their own, with many jokingly praising “Kirbyroth” as the biggest news story of 2020.

Kirbyroth is the perfect summation of the sheer craziness that Nintendo has been able to achieve with the Smash Bros. franchise. Numerous third-party franchises like Metal Gear Solid, Street Fighter, PersonaBanjo-Kazooie, and, most recently, Minecraft, have seen playable representation in recent entries, and Ultimate’s Mii fighter costumes, assist trophies, and spirits have brought in even more. That Sephiroth is now a part of a roster that includes everyone from Kirby to fellow Final Fantasy 7 star Cloud Strife goes to show just how impressive Nintendo’s crossover game has gotten.

Better yet, fans can get their hands on both Sephiroth and Kirbyroth right now. Even though the Sephiroth DLC won’t be out until December 22, Sephiroth himself can be unlocked early by beating a new limited-time mode that’s available to everyone who’s already purchased the DLC or Ultimate’s Fighter Pass Vol. 2. The mode has players fight Sephiroth in a one-on-one boss battle, and defeating him will let them play as him right away, meaning they will be able to experience Kirbyroth firsthand that much sooner.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available for the Switch.
