Featuring a variety of announcements and the awarding of some well-deserved accolades, Geoff Keighley’s annual Game Awards showcase was received fairly well when it debuted earlier this month. Among seeing The Last of Us 2 joining an elite group of winners by being crowned the event’s Game of the Year, it also saw announcements for a new Perfect Dark game, a spiritual successor to Dead Space known as The Callisto Protocol, and a fresh Among Us map.
It seems the night was successful in more ways than just fan reaction, however, with Keighley announcing that the event was the most-watched showcase in Game Awards history. Pulling in a total of 83 million livestreams (an 83% increase over last year) and 8.3 million concurrent viewers, it seems the Game Awards has once again reached new heights with this year’s offering.
For context, last year’s showcase managed to score 45.2 million viewers while its first-ever event, which debuted back in 2014, pulled in a much smaller 1.9 million viewers. As Keighley’s yearly celebration of all things gaming continues to grow, it seems like it’s truly becoming a fixture of the gaming calendar, with millions of players tuning in to see which of their favorite titles pick up awards.
It’s not surprising this year was such a success when considering it boasted some major talent, including the likes of Gal Gadot, Tom Holland, Brie Larson, Keanu Reeves, and Christopher Nolan. During the event itself, The Last of Us 2 managed to break Game Awards records by securing seven victories, while games like Hades, Ghost of Tsushima, and Final Fantasy 7 Remake also took home some big substantial prizes.
