Xbox Offering Full Refunds for Cyberpunk 2077 | Game Rant

Few could have predicted Cyberpunk 2077‘s launch going the way it has. The game was once considered one of the year’s most-anticipated titles, with anticipation so high that CD Projekt Red was able to recoup its development cost on the first day of release. Since then, however, it’s become apparent that Cyberpunk 2077 has major technical issues, especially when playing it on a base PS4 or Xbox One. CD Projekt Red has promised to refund any disappointed Cyberpunk 2077 fans, and now Xbox has extended that offer as well.

Xbox has announced that it will be offering a full refund to anyone who has purchased Cyberpunk 2077 through its digital marketplace. Typically there are some restrictions and rules that apply when requesting a refund from Xbox, but it seems those rules are being set aside for Cyberpunk 2077. Meanwhile, Cyberpunk 2077 will remain on sale digitally on Xbox, so anyone that wants to get the game regardless is free to do so, and may ask for a refund if it’s not what they expected.

As part of its statement, Xbox acknowledged that CD Projekt Red has “worked hard” to ship Cyberpunk 2077 “in extremely challenging circumstances,” likely a nod to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. COVID-19 has had a massive impact on game development all around the world, though CD Projekt Red has yet to point the blame at that specifically. Instead the company has taken responsibility for the situation, acknowledging that it should have paid closer attention to how the game ran on older hardware.

Moving forward, it will be interesting to see how this situation impacts game development as a whole. It’s been common practice for some time for games to release in somewhat buggier or slightly unfinished states, with developers adding content or fixing things over time through patches. Cyberpunk 2077 sets a precedent that indicates this may have serious consequences, and so perhaps games will start spending more time in the oven instead of being released before they’re truly ready.

As far as Cyberpunk 2077 goes, it’s worth pointing out that reviews for the game were widely positive at first. The first batch of Cyberpunk 2077 reviews helped the game become one of the highest-rated titles of 2020, but it soon came to light that those reviews were based on versions of the game running on high-end PCs. This indicates that Cyberpunk 2077 may very well be an exceptional game on hardware that can do it justice, and so maybe it will get a new lease on life next year.

Cyberpunk 2077 is coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X in 2021, and it will presumably have most of its technical issues ironed out by then. Not only that, but the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of the open world game should be much more impressive from a visuals and technical standpoint as well. Maybe fans will be willing to give the game a second chance at that point, but in the meantime, anyone who wants a refund from Xbox should take advantage of the offer while they still can.

Cyberpunk 2077 is out now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions coming in 2021.
