The Epic Games Store Holiday Sale is in full swing, discounting dozens of games up to 75 percent from now through January 7. For many PC gamers, particularly those trying to save some money, it’s not the Holiday Sale so much as the daily free games that are worth looking forward to. This year, Epic Games is giving Epic Games Store users 15 Days of Free Games, with one free game available each day. Today’s free game has been revealed: the tower defense title Defense Grid: The Awakening.
Defense Grid: The Awakening was originally released on PC in 2008. However, despite being over a decade old, Defense Grid: The Awakening has a surprising longevity. The boom of tower defense games from the 2000s that spun out of mods for Blizzard’s RTS games led to Defense Grid, which is a showcase of the genre. In earnest, it’s a perfect option to make the most of a holiday break, or some time at home due to the pandemic.
Fittingly, for those who enjoy their time with Defense Grid: The Awakening, there’s also a robust DLC pack available. It’s not included with the free game, but it is currently discounted as part of the Epic Games Store Holiday Sale. It can be purchased for just $4.99 and includes six total DLC packs. You Monster, a Portal-themed story expansion; Containment; and four Resurgence Map Packs are included.
Those interested in Defense Grid: The Awakening will have to act fast. The game is only available for 24 hours. It will no longer be free as of Monday, December 21, and will be replaced by another, as-yet-unnamed free game. Epic Games Store users can go and claim Defense Grid now.
Defense Grid: The Awakening is the fourth free game offered as part of Epic’s 15 Days of Free Games. Come and gone have been Cities: Skylines, Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty, and The Long Dark. Eleven more free games will be made available between now and January 7. To get them all, Epic Games Store users will have to log in every day to claim each individual game.
Technically, the remaining games in the 15 Days of Free Games are a mystery, as they are supposed to be secrets for Epic users to discover when they log in each day. However, a reliable leak has seemingly confirmed the remaining free games. Potential upcoming highlights Metro 2033, Darkest Dungeon, and Night in the Woods. Epic is once again delivering a holiday season full of great free games on the Epic Games Store.
