There are countless brand new games to get excited for that came out this year, but some titles that are years old are still giving. It’s not rare for exceptional multiplayer games to have life spans far beyond their initial hype and release, but even single-player titles can often survive with loyal fanbases for many years. Good DLC can keep giving players more of what they loved about the base game, and 2020 saw a flood of story, multiplayer, quality of life, and expansions DLCs for all types of games new and old.
Some of the DLCs listed here are payed expansions while others are massive free content drops. From new characters and classes in co-op and fighting games to continued story exploration for linear story based games and MMOs, there’s extra content listed here that will please fans of practically any genre. Rather than listing these DLCs by importance, they will be in alphabetical order by the title of their base games.
10 Borderlands 3 – Krieg DLC
Borderlands 3 is a worthy successor to the series that crystalized the looter-shooter genre and gave every co-op FPS game a level of popularity to aspire to. The endless variation in guns, instantly recognizable artstyle, and over-the-top humor are all important parts of the Borderlands brand, but ultimately the combat is the main draw. The Krieg DLC for Borderlands 3 expands the story and adds tons of loot, and although the Krieg DLC is shorter than some of the others, its re-introduction of an extremely fun character and on-brand storytelling make it well worth picking up.
9 Control – The Foundation
Control was one of the most impressive and beautiful games of 2019, with fantastic art direction, a spectacular story, and proper utilization of ray tracing technology to boot. As a story experience, it’s hard to beat a psychological horror mystery made by the developer of Alan Wake, so more of that greatness is exactly what fans wanted from DLC expansions. The Foundation DLC continues the story with protagonist Jesse Faden as the new head of the Bureau, and builds out the exciting setting while still keeping enough mystery for players to fall in love with it even further.
8 Doom Eternal – The Ancient Gods Part 1
Doom Eternal was a 2020 title, but it’s never too early for more content. The Ancient Gods Part 1 DLC is the first DLC to release for what is now known as one of the best single-player shooters in years. The new Doom remakes are as fast-paced and challenging as the classic shooters that made the name legendary to begin with, but they add all the considerations that make modern games more user friendly. After carving their way through the base campaign and mastering Doom‘s challenging combat, The Ancient Gods presents players with more of the same, but harder. For people who can’t get enough of the punishing difficulty Doom dishes out, The Ancient Gods will scratch the right itch.
7 Elder Scroll Online – Greymoor
Elder Scrolls Online continues to deliver more adventures in Tamriel with all the trappings of a very competent MMORPG, and regular expansions have kept fans entertained while showing off the creativity of ESO‘s developer when coming up with new regions to explore. The newest expansion, though, goes back to some nostalgic territory, opening up a familiar section of Skyrim. For fans of the legendary open world RPG, it’s a fun romp through memorable locations, but Greymoor also adds new territory in Blackreach too. This area largely unexplored in 2011’s Skyrim and is beautifully rendered. With some nostalgia, some more original content, and a few new game systems for loot, Greymoor is a satisfying addition.
6 Ghost of Tsushima – Legends
Ghost of Tsushima was a massive hit for Sucker Punch, earning the player’s voice award at the 2020 Game Awards for its stunningly beautiful environments, great gameplay, and satisfying story campaign. As an extremely popular story-focused RPG, no one expected Ghost of Tsushima to get a multiplayer mode, but that’s exactly what fans got. Ghost of Tsushima: Legends adds a variety of co-op modes with a supernatural flair, differentiating it from the base game but nonetheless making one of the year’s best titles even more appealing.
5 Mortal Kombat 11- New Characters
Mortal Kombat 11 is the go-to option for both seriously competitive fighting game adherents or just casual players looking to duke it out and attempt hyper-violent fatalities on each other. Because Mortal Kombat 11 is published by Warner Brothers, it has also been treated to some of the funniest and coolest DLC characters this side of Smash Bros. There are plenty of fan-requested Mortal Kombat characters like Sheeva, Shang Tsung, and Mileena in Mortal Kombat 11‘s DLCs, but RoboCop, Rambo, The Joker, The Terminator, and Spawn are all playable fighters too. There’s plenty to say about MK11‘s time-tested combat mechanics, but frankly, the fact that two friends can play Rambo vs. Terminator speaks for itself.
4 Pokemon Sword and Shield – Crown Tundra
The Crown Tundra DLC is some of the best content available in Pokemon Sword and Shield. It may be short, but it sure is sweet, with plenty of legendary Pokemon to track down and capture in interesting ways. Like its predecessor Isle of Armor, Crown Tundra is one big wild area, but it offers a lot more freedom of exploration in its sandbox. It also includes a new game mode, Dynamax adventures, which helps add a lot more value to a relatively short story expansion.
3 Remnant: From the Ashes – Subject 2923
As Souls-likes go, Remnant: From the Ashes is one of the most unique. It is clearly inspired by FromSoftware’s genre-defining RPGs, but it adds so many of its own ideas as to stand on its own as a totally new experience. A Souls-like shooter with partially-randomized level design adds a huge amount of replayability and is a completely different take on a genre that is usually extremely focused on melee combat. In a Remnant interview with Game Rant, it was revealed that the Subject 2923 DLC has story elements and mechanics that the developers had always wanted to explore, wrapping a neat bow on the game’s story. It adds a wealth of discoverable lore, new weapons, and of course a massive new region to explore and fight challenging enemies in.
2 Super Smash Bros: Ultimate- Minecraft DLC
Super Smash Bros: Ultimate has a massive roster of characters from all corners of gaming, which makes the extent to which Minecraft‘s Steve (and other characters) have been incorporated into the brawler all the more impressive. Every map in the game had to be updated to accommodate their mining and crafting abilities, which make Steve completely different from any other character but still a blast to play as. The Minecraft DLC might not totally change the game for good, but it certainly shows once again how good Smash Bros is at consistently surprising and delighting players with new content that goes far beyond what anyone could predict.
1 Total War Warhammer II – Warden and the Paunch
Most RTS games conjure up images of hyper-realistic warfare, deep strategy, and byzantine mechanics, but Total War has always been a beacon of streamlined fun combined with big-battle spectacle. Total War Warhammer adds the massive Warhammer fantasy setting to that mixture, allowing players to battle with dinosaurs, pharaoh skeletons, steampunk rats, zombie pirates, and countless other factions. Total War Warhammer 2 has been kept alive and vibrant with constant updates, but the recent Warden and the Paunch expansion added extremely fun new mechanics for both the high elves and the greenskins (orcs.) Whether players choose to be a vengeful warlord capturing enemy lords or a comically over-stuffed goblin commanding hordes of minions, this DLC was one of the best expansions to the game so far.
