Epic Games Store Free Game for December 21 is Available Now

The holidays are a time for togetherness, family, and video game deals. The Epic Games Store is taking care of that last part by revealing a free game in the store each day until the end of the year, as part of its 15 Days of Free Games campaign. So far, the games on offer have been a mix of genres, providing a little something for everyone. It also appears that a leaked list of the Epic Games Store freebies is, in fact, accurate.

Following that leaked list, it should be no surprise that the game for December 21, 2020 is the tense and claustrophobic Alien: Isolation. The game, which was released all the way back in 2014, is closely tied to the original Alien movie, with players taking on the role of Amanda Ripley, the daughter of Sigourney Weaver’s character from the movie franchise, Ellen Ripley. Searching for clues to her mother’s disappearance, Amanda journeys to the space station Sevastopol only to find it has been overrun by Xenomorphs, the Alien franchise’s trademark creature. Alien: Isolation is considered to be one of the best survival horror games of this generation, and it’s not hard to see why.

In a mini-documentary released recently, staff at Alien: Isolation developer Creative Assembly discuss some of the challenges they faced when trying to capture the feeling of the 1979 film. The game’s focus on stealth, with tense moments where the player’s only option is to hide from the near-invincible Xenomorph, was a key element the team wanted to get right. The game also came out at a time when the Alien brand was struggling. The 2012 film Prometheus split the fan base, while the 2013 video game Aliens: Colonial Marines was panned. Seeing those misfires put additional pressure on the team to deliver a solid product.

The Epic Games Store free game promotion is just one of the ways the company is trying to entice gamers over to their storefront this holiday season. In order to compete against the once monolithic Steam, the Epic Games Store is offering $10 coupons as well this year. What makes these coupons more valuable than most is they are unlimited use. A big incentive to try and get gamers to switch their allegiance.

With the rumored list of games proving to be more accurate, fans should look forward to Metro 2033 and Tropico 5 to be next to drop. For now, picking up a game with one the scariest cut scenes in gaming for free, seems like a good deal.
