Pokemon GO: How To Beat Cliff (December 2020) | Game Rant

By now, many Pokemon Trainers have grown used to the rhythms of Pokemon GO, and have a general sense of when to expect regular shifts, like enemy lineup changes. Now that December’s well underway, players have not only new opponents to face, but also new Pokemon to face them with.

Team GO Rocket lineups overall tend to change as the weeks go by, but most players focus on Team GO Rocket Leaders specifically. These Pokemon GO bosses, Cliff, Arlo, and Sierra, are some of the only people in possession of Shiny Shadow Pokemon, for one, so it makes them all the more exciting to defeat.

This December, Team GO Rocket’s Cliff features a set of Pokemon that can actually be handled quite well by a powerful Grass-type or two. Thankfully, he’s one of the easier Pokemon Leaders to defeat this time around. In short, players looking to take on Cliff this season should simply aim for a powerful Exeggutor, Torterra, Roserade, and another similar back-up Pokemon, and they’ll be all set.

This might seem normal or casual, but Pokemon GO veterans know all too well that this represents an unusually easy challenge, considering the usual Team GO Rocket Leader lineups. Cliff currently has the following Pokemon on his team:

  1. Omanyte
  2. Machamp, Onix, or Electivire
  3. Tyranitar, Swampert, or Torterra

Cliff is presently using Shadow Omanyte as his first Pokemon, but his second and third will be one each of the three mentioned above, respectively. Normally, players should take opponent’s movesets into account when choosing teams, but in this case, Cliff’s Pokemon aren’t too diverse, so it’s safe to simply go by their Types.

Plain and simple, Omanyte, Onix, Tyranitar, and Swampert (so 4 out of 7 total Pokemon) are all weak, if not doubly weak, to Grass-type moves. This makes a powerful Grass-type user absolutely critical. Moreover, Electivire, Torterra, and to a lesser extent, Machamp, are all fairly well-resisted by Grass-types. Thus, the main strategy is: bring along one or two strong Grass-type attackers, with a back-up counter in case of Torterra. Torterra would be the only actual obstacle for a pure Grass-type, so bringing something along specifically in case of that would be highly recommended.

Specifically, Exeggutor (both Kantonian and Alolan Form) shines in this fight. If given Seed Bomb as a Charged Attack, Exeggutor can run down Cliff’s shields in a handful of seconds. Not to mention the move is double super effective against Omanyte, for starters. If given a Psychic-type Fast Attack, Exeggutor can also help against Machamp, though Seed Bomb should be more than enough. Of course, if there’s no available Exeggutor, any strong higher level Grass attacker will work (e.g. Torterra, Roserade, Sceptile, Vileplume). Pokemon that would complement the team well include: Togekiss, Dialga/Dragonite, and Heatran. These would all help with more than one of Cliff’s counters, while providing the general bulkiness of Legendary/rarer Pokemon.

Arlo, Cliff, and Sierra, are all notorious for teaming up with oddly powerful standard Pokemon, which often pose a threat to even Legendaries. Normally, GO Rocket Leaders cover their Type bases much more effectively than in this case, forcing players to employ a more thoughtfully diverse team – moreover, their lineups are chosen at random from a small pool of Pokemon, so players won’t know which particular lineup to expect when confronting a GO Rocket Leader. In light of this, players should be glad that Cliff’s current lineup features Pokemon that are mostly either susceptible to Grass-type damage, or easily resisted by Grass-type Pokemon. It’s a much easier-than-usual chance to meet the adorable Cthulhu doppelgänger otherwise known as Shiny Shadow Omanyte.

Pokemon GO is available now on the App Store, Google Play, PC, and PS4, and is currently in development for PS5 and Switch.
