It’s still strange to think that after nearly a decade of waiting, just a few months ago Phantasy Star Online 2 finally saw official release in the West. While English players now have the chance to see what the fuss is about, some may be waiting for the upcoming Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis expansion and overhaul.
Confirmed at the Xbox Games Showcase earlier this year, Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis is a expansion hybrid set to release in 2021. The upcoming expansion won’t just see a huge amount of new content introduced, but will utilize an entirely new graphics engine that will also apply to the original 2012 release of Phantasy Star Online 2.
With Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis getting a gameplay trailer back in September, fans are eagerly awaiting more content from publisher Sega’s own MMORPG upgrade. While the release is still only set for a tentative 2021, Sega has added extra assurance by releasing the opening cinematic for the upcoming expansion. The opening movie definitely captures the spirit of action but also provides a sense of what New Genesis seeks to introduce.
The trailer immediately starts off by being far more faithful that other PSO2 intros. The above opening movie is entirely created with actual in-engine graphics according to the trailer’s description. Beyond just showing how Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis will bring the game up to more modern graphical standards, it also indicates the core new feature of New Genesis. One of the bigger selling points of the expansion is the “open-field” gameplay which will see new mechanics introduced to the near decade old game.
With Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis preparing for a 2021 launch, original PSO2 players are still going to be very busy. Sega has been consistent in providing new events for Phantasy Star Online 2, including a recent crossover with Yakuza: Like a Dragon. So with no firm date as to when New Genesis will be released, at least the opening cinematic promises good things to come.
Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis will be available in 2021 on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series consoles.
