Sephiroth recently released in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, becoming the third fighter for Fighters Pass 2. There are still three more fighters yet to be revealed, and fans are anxiously awaiting the next reveal. While the possibilities are nearly endless, the addition of Sephiroth has changed things a bit, namely the fact that there doesn’t seem to be a limit to the number of third party characters from a single franchise that are limited. With two representatives from Final Fantasy, Street Fighter, and Castlevania, it opens the door for other third party companies to include a second (or even third) rep from a game series.
The other fact that Sephiroth seems to establish is that Smash Ultimate is all about shining the spotlight on the villains. Ultimate introduced tons of new villainous characters, from long-requested ones like King K. Rool and Ridley to other less obvious additions like Piranha Plant. With that in mind, it seems likely more villains may populate this Fighters Pass, if not an eventual (and hopeful) Fighters Pass 3.
It honestly comes as a big surprise that Dr. Eggman, or Dr. Robotnik as he’s also known, hasn’t already made his way into the Super Smash Bros. franchise at this point. Sega and Nintendo have worked closely with one another on countless occasions, producing collaborative games like the Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games titles, and Sega even releasing exclusive Sonic games for Nintendo’s platforms like Sonic Colors for the Wii and Sonic Lost World for Wii U. But moving beyond the companies’ partnerships, Dr. Eggman just makes so much sense for the franchise.
Sonic the Hedgehog is a video game icon, and it feels very strange at this point to not see the him accompanied by a second character from the franchise with none feeling more deserving than his main foe, Dr. Eggman himself. Dr. Eggman’s moveset possibilities are also nearly endless, with the mad scientist possessing loads of different inventions, contraptions, and weapons that could make for some very exciting attacks. Out of all of the video game villains that could come to Smash, Dr. Eggman seems like he’d fit the bill well.
Dr. Wily is another character who would fit nicely into Smash Ultimate‘s roster. While not quite as popular as Sonic’s nemesis, Mega Man’s Dr. Wily has been around since the days of the original NES and has a very strong tie to Nintendo’s brand. Dr. Wily, like Eggman, has controlled a large range of different weaponry and machines throughout the course of the Mega Man franchise, so his moveset has great potential. With Capcom’s other flagship franchise, Street Fighter, already getting two representatives in Ultimate, it doesn’t seem like it would be asking too much for Mega Man to also get a second fighter as well.
Out of all of the original Nintendo franchises that have been represented in the Smash Bros. series since the Nintendo 64 original, it seems that F-Zero has gotten the short end of the stick. Captain Falcon is the sole character to represent the series, and even though there hasn’t been a new game in over a decade, it still feels odd to not have even a second fighter from F-Zero in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Even the Mother series has two reps, and fans in America haven’t gotten a new official entry in that franchise since Earthbound released on the Super Nintendo in 1994.
It would be great to see Captain Falcon face off against another character from his game series, and none feel more deserving than Black Shadow, the main villain from the classic racing series. Black Shadow oozes charm, with a silly personality not unlike that of a cartoon super-villain. The character would fit right into Smash and would help draw more attention to the F-Zero brand overall.
Even though Banjo and Kazooie were only just recently added to the Smash Bros. roster, it would be quite exciting to see the bear and bird’s main rival Gruntilda get added to the series as well. This grumpy witch has been antagonizing Banjo and Kazooie since the series’ first installment on the Nintendo 64. While not nearly as recognizable as other Smash villains like Bowser or Ganondorf, Grunty is a fun character and would make for a very exciting addition to the Smash roster. Like Sonic and Mega Man, Banjo-Kazooie almost feels incomplete without its series’ villainous character, so Grunty’s inclusion would likely make a whole lot of fans happy.
The Super Mario series already has a ton of representation in the Smash Bros. games, but there are a few notable characters and games that have yet to get the recognition that they deserve. Luigi’s Mansion, which already has a stage based off of it in Smash Ultimate, is a series that now has more relevancy than ever before with the recent release of Luigi’s Mansion 3 and its main villain, King Boo, could make for an interesting new fighter.
The Smash series has yet to feature any ghost characters, so King Boo has the potential to offer a truly unique moveset and offer something that no other fighter has thus far. With the character already appearing as a playable character in games like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Mario Superstar Baseball, it wouldn’t seem too out of place for the character to become playable in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
It does feel like Waluigi fans are beating a dead horse at this point, but it may as well be mentioned again: there is a huge community of Smash fans that want Waluigi as a playable fighter. And on the topic of villains that should come to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, it’s hard to not talk about Waluigi. This character made his first appearance in 2000’s Mario Tennis, serving as a tennis partner for Mario’s nemesis, Wario.
The two evil brothers have gone on to become a fairly iconic duo, with Waluigi appearing alongside Wario in nearly all of the Mario‘s future spin-off games from Mario Party and Mario Kart to various sports games. Waluigi, in a way, could serve as a representative for all of Mario‘s lesser franchises such as Mario Party and Mario Tennis, which have yet to get any sort of major presence in Smash Bros.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available now for the Nintendo Switch.
