Few games, if any, have had a success story quite like Among Us. The multiplayer deception simulator has become a phenomenon this year, with according to Steam records alone, hundreds of thousands of players lying to and eliminating their friends, each day.
With this massive fanbase comes increased passion, attention, and ultimately, innovation. One Among Us fan took his love for the game and combined it with an aptitude and creativity for gaming technology, to create something no one previously thought possible.
Located in the Among Us section of Reddit, member u/BurritoSOFTWARE proudly displayed the game functional and running, on an original Nintendo Wii console. The fan would go on to explain exactly how this ingenious feat was achieved. “My Wii and PC are connected to my router with 2 ethernet adapters. Then, I used WiiVNC and TightVNC Server to stream Among Us off my PC to my Wii. This isn’t practical or anything, more of a POC. It’s really slow too, even with wired conns. Edit: Also how to type, I press 2 on the Wiimote and an onscreen keyboard appears.”
It is worth noting, by the fan’s own admission, that the game is not running optimally on the 14 year old Nintendo console. By essentially streaming Among Us from his PC to the Wii, the game’s frame rate and actual ability to run does appear to be far too slow for practical or enjoyable play. Typing as well, in lieu of a traditional voice chat or keyboard, seems to be activated by pressing a button on the controller for access to an on screen keyboard. Regardless, this is still an incredible and interesting accomplishment, made with care and ingenuity for one of the best games of 2020.
Among us, despite being named multiplayer game of the year by The Game Awards, originally launched on June 15th 2018. This year however, perhaps due to the emphasis on staying at home and a huge increase in social gaming, the indie sensation has become one of the most popular games on the planet. Equally remarkable, developers Innersloth is comprised of only 4 people. These developers deserve all due accolades and credit for creating such an engaging and captivating multiplayer experience. YouTube reported that videos about Among Us were viewed 4 billion times in September 2020 and TikTok videos related to Among Us had over 13 billion views in October 2020. As of this writing, the game has surpassed a staggering 100 million downloads.
Originally, a sequel to Among Us was planned, but due to the explosion of popularity and player base, Innersloth is wisely focusing on expanding and maintaining this game that has captured the hearts and minds of so many gamers this year. With an ever growing and highly engaged fan base, it will be interesting to see what innovations, expressions and creations gamers create to not only show their love for Among Us, but also help us see the game in new and unexpected ways.
Among Us is currently available on PC, Mobile, Nintendo Switch and will be coming to Xbox, via Game Pass, in 2o21.
