If there was ever a good reason to let out a steady stream of expletives, it’s the entire year of 2020, and Netflix apparently agrees. After recently announcing their upcoming series covering the history of swearing, the streaming service has now released a trailer for History of Swear Words hosted by Nicolas Cage to give audiences a taste of what’s in store.
The trailer opens appropriately with a passionate and sustained f-word shouted by Cage, signifying exactly the sort of experience audiences are in for. “Join me on a journey through the history, evolution, and cultural impact of swear words,” he says, as the trailer shifts over to other high-profile talking heads like Sarah Silverman and Nikki Glaser teasing their own involvement in the series.
Contrary to what the humorous vibe of this low-key documentary might suggest, there appears to be a genuine focus on the actual history and nuances behind the curse words shared between enemies and friends alike day by day. From the origins of certain words to various censorship attempts by conservative groups over the years, it seems that no stone will remain unturned in this exploration of obscenity, for better or worse. So make sure the little ones are safely in another room when this comes up in the queue. Warning: the trailer is completely uncensored, so viewers should watch at their own discretion, or at least with the volume way down.
Political correctness does indeed seem to be taking a vacation on this one. The f-word, the sh-word, and even the c-word get their time to shine in all their uncensored glory during the trailer. Normally, trailers tend to be at least a little watered down compared to the finished product. Either Netflix is bucking that trend entirely, or History of Swear Words will push the envelope to infinity and beyond. Plus, the trailer also highlights a segment where participants test a theory that swearing can help someone endure pain for longer, so there are plenty of opportunities to get really colorful with the language during something like that.
Now, some might be wondering if certain other words like racial slurs may be addressed in this, since they don’t appear in the trailer along with their uncouth brethren. It’s entirely possible, but it’s equally probable that certain words will receive little more than a passing mention, as their focus is much more on punching down, similar to ableist language, than other choice curses. But of course, this is more speculation than anything concrete.
For all audiences know, History of Swear Words could be an untethered free-for-all where even the most divisive verbal barbs are fair game. It would certainly give Netflix some attention, and that’s likely what they’re going for with such a series. Lots of movies are known for their sheer amount of cursing, after all. However it turns out, viewers are sure to feel the urge to play along, just to get the taste of the past year out of their mouths.
History of Swear Words will begin streaming on Netflix January 5, 2021.
