When former Congressman Duncan Hunter pleaded guilty to spending campaign funds on personal items and video games, few argued against his prompt resignation. Now, almost a year after that event, President Donald Trump has pardoned the man, making him the 15th convicted criminal to get a full pardon from the 45th President of the United States.
Hunter admitted to spending a massive $250,000 of his campaign fund on non-campaign related expenses. This included things like expensive hotels, items for his family, and of course, video games. Though it’s not clear exactly how much he spent on the hobby, the former congressmen has confirmed that at least $1,300 went into buying video games and related services.
While $1,300 is indubitably a lot of money on video games, it’s not exactly detailed on what that was spent-on. Frequent stories show how quickly microtransactions can add up, while buying even a dozen AAA games can eat up the majority of that amount rather quickly. Regardless, Hunter was set to spend some time in jail for his infraction, but his incarceration was delayed by the Coronavirus pandemic. Had things continued on as planned, he would have served 11 months in prison starting on January 4th, but that isn’t going to be the case anymore.
Now that Hunter has been pardoned, he is completely absolved of all punishment that would have been dealt out as a result of his actions. Additionally, he can never be tried again for this crime, and since he never served any jail time to begin with, the worst to come from it was his resignation as a congressman. This comes as part of a wave of Presidential pardons, 20 to be exact, granting the same benefits to several other people just before President Trump leaves office.
Altogether, Congressman Hunter’s situation is unique. Not only did he become famous due to his vaping habit, he also is known to have two pet rabbits named Eggburt and Cadbury, and, for years, Hunter had been an advocate of video games, fighting against the narrative that violent video games make violent kids.
Again, as President Trump‘s pardons take effect before Hunter’s jail time would have started, the former congressman will not serve jail time for his crimes whatsoever.
