Now that the twelfth major installment in the Assassin’s Creed series is out, the franchise runs the risk of growing stale before its conclusion. The overarching story of Assassin’s Creed has become convoluted, as simply trying to connect the dots between Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is likely to give someone a headache. However, there are alternate storylines to keep players engaged
Thankfully, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla has a gorgeous open-world and an abundance of quests. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey was a leap in art direction, but this latest installment is genuinely remarkable. Which games have the most breathtaking open-worlds, ones comparable to Assassin’s Creed Valhalla?
10 Immortals Fenyx Rising
One of the newest open-world games on the block provides an eye-opening adventure. Immortals Fenyx Rising is available on next-gen platforms like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and older systems such as the Nintendo Switch.
Immortals Fenyx Rising has artwork along the lines of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, a comparison that has been made by quite a few people. Both games contain massive open-worlds with far draw distances and perplexing puzzles. It wouldn’t be a stretch to say Immortals Fenyx Rising is as beautiful as Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.
9 Red Dead Redemption 2
Before Assassin’s Creed Valhalla was released, plenty of open-world games came out that set new standards for the subgenre. Rather than release another generic open-world title, Rockstar Games incorporated realism like never before.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is proof that Rockstar Games knows open-world design. The game’s scenic environments set across the regions of the United States are just waiting to be marveled at. With dynamic weather and thriving wildlife, Red Dead Redemption 2 could be considered more breathtaking than Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.
8 Horizon Zero Dawn
In a post-apocalyptic world where humans have been pushed to the brink of annihilation, one person, Aloy, sets out to discover the mystery behind her past. Artificial intelligence runs rampant on Horizon Zero Dawn‘s lands.
Exploring this world, it becomes abundantly clear that Horizon Zero Dawn has great art direction. Both Horizon Zero Dawn and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla are part of the RPG genre and showcase impressive attention to detail.
7 Middle-earth: Shadow Of War
The one and only sequel to Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, Middle-earth: Shadow Of War delivers a more intriguing storyline and a better world to explore. As a combat system can make or break a game’s enjoyability, this open-world title wisely opted to take inspiration from the Batman: Arkham series.
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor goes above and beyond with an immersive world that can rival Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.
6 The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition
Just as the game was beginning to show its age, developer Bethesda Game Studios re-released The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim with remastered graphics. Undoubtedly, the new product is the best way to experience the game.
Packed with all of the DLC, Skyrim‘s open-world is densely packed with plenty of story quests and side missions. Naturally, as a new release, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla has better graphics than Skyrim.
5 The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
When it comes to breathtaking open-world games, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is one of the first games that tends to come to mind. As it was released in 2015, CD Projekt Red’s game no longer has one of the most beautiful open-world on the market as many new releases have surpassed it, however, that does not diminish the overall experience.
It also won’t stop players from becoming lost in The Witcher 3‘s map.
4 Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
The Assassin’s Creed series has steadily become more about action RPG than stealth. The genre may have shifted, but it’s hard to ignore the impressive leaps Ubisoft has made in the series’ open-world design.
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey proved that the franchise was still relevant and that Origins was not just an anomaly. Its Greek setting mixes realism with mythology to create a mesmerizing world that is filled with wonder and beauty.
3 Death Stranding
As this game feels almost like a movie, chances are someone might not enjoy Death Stranding if they care little about its story. At the same time, Death Stranding’s immersive open-world takes you to some of the most beautiful locations in gaming history.
It’s not a stretch to compare Death Stranding to Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, as both raised the bar for graphics. From the bright minds at Kojima Productions came an unorthodox video game that is perhaps ahead of its time.
2 The Legend of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild
Finally, The Legend of Zelda has started to become more of an RPG with an open-world rather than an action-adventure game. Nintendo is not a developer known for realistic games, although there are exceptions to the rule. Around every nook and cranny in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild‘s world are subtle details that have helped to ensure this game has lasting appeal.
While not the most realistic game out there, that won’t prevent many from appreciating The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild‘s splendid setting and stylish visuals.
1 Ghost Of Tsushima
An open-world has never looked more spectacular than the one found in Ghost of Tsushima. Games like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla are much more than walking simulators, as they contain character development, quests, dialogue, and exploration.
Ubisoft and open-world games are synonymous, but developers like Sucker Punch Productions are stepping up to prove they can bring something fresh to the subgenre. Ghost of Tsushima is stunning.
