Among Us Fan Recreates ‘All I Want for Christmas is You’ Song Using In-Game Sounds

As Christmas Day approaches, many are undoubtedly logging into different games to participate in holiday-themed events such as Fortnite‘s Operation Snowdown, or to spend time with those they may not see in person this year. Among Us is one breakout title that should see a lot of play this holiday season, but one YouTube channel has gone a step further to inject some Christmas spirit directly into Innersloth’s social deduction game.

Swedish YouTube channel UMadBroYolo uploaded a video on December 20 recreating Mariah Carey’s iconic holiday song “All I Want for Christmas Is You” exclusively using sound effects from Among Us. The accompanying video takes place on the mostly outdoor Polis map and follows a crewmate named White as they perform the song using footsteps, the maze-like weather nodes, unhooking keys, and more.

One particularly fun part of the video is how it breaks off to turn into a real game of Among Us, in which White is killed by the imposters Red and Blue, and subsequently replaced by Red performing the song using new minigames like shooting asteroids. The channel has a sizable catalog of music recreated with sound effects, for example performing The White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army” through Call of Duty: Warzone, but this take on “All I Want for Christmas Is You” should appeal to many this time of year.

Carey released “All I Want for Christmas Is You” on her 1994 album Merry Christmas, and it has been a hallmark of the holiday ever since. In fact, Carey’s Christmas song held the record for longest consecutive run at the top of Billboard’s Hot 100 chart until July 2019, according to Rolling Stone, when it was finally beat out by Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road.” That being said, “All I want for Christmas is You” still took the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in December 2019.

Among Us has been one of the biggest surprise successes of 2020, particularly because it first released in 2018. After a number of streamers and YouTube personalities began playing the game amid ongoing coronavirus pandemic lockdowns, Among Us has become one of the most popular games of all time in terms of active monthly users.

That success has led to the developers scrapping their plans for an Among Us 2 so they could expand the original entry instead, and an upcoming new map was showcased during The Game Awards 2020. Celebrities and politicians have also flocked to the game, with U.S. Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez holding a voting rally before the 2020 Presidential Election and even Lil Nas X playing Among Us with streamers like Pokimane.

Among Us is available now for Mobile, Nintendo Switch, and PC, and it will release for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S in 2021.
