Destiny 2 is enjoying a busy month after the release of its third major expansion, Beyond Light, and the first holiday event of Year 4. Fans have started completing the newly released Deep Stone Crypt Raid Challenges, and stockpiling Dawning Spirit for the holidays. Amidst the activity, one player shares an asset they found tucked away under Europa’s ice. The zone still has more secrets to uncover, and this discovery may hint to the return of the Black Garden in some form.
Europa is the latest destination to be added to Destiny 2, and it is packed with lore and discoverables. Players have communed with the Darkness and faced the Vex on the frozen moon, two entities that have strong ties to the Black Garden. The current season is far from over, so it may have more to offer soon. There could be a unique mission to take players back to the Black Garden for another encounter with the Darkness. A Vex portal already exists underground on Europa, so this isn’t too far of a stretch.
As for the asset found, it depicts an ancient Vex structure projected onto a smooth surface. The parallax effect makes it seem like a gateway or portal, similar to the Vault of Glass portal Easter egg inside the Whisper mission on Io. In fact, the player who shared this find, Ranger_btw, believes it to be linked to the Vault of Glass, an old Destiny 1 Raid returning in Year 4. This is a valid guess, but multiple users have likened the footage to the Black Garden instead. All of this is purely speculation and both sides have a point.
Meanwhile, some fans are cautious about getting their hopes up as this could simply be a test or leftover asset. Europa has many glitches and sights not meant to be seen by players, so this could be a reflection map or cube map used solely in reflective elements like water or glass. As an example, one Redditor pointed out that Forsaken‘s Dreaming City had utilized an Iron Temple reflection map for water puddles inside Lost Sectors. The Iron Temple did make a brief return in Destiny 2, but that probably was a happy coincidence.
Bungie has been slowly adding content from the first game into Destiny 2, thus, almost anything is on the cards. Fans debate whether old content should be updated or imported as is, and Bungie most likely is testing the waters with Year 4. For instance, Vault of Glass was recently confirmed to be more challenging in its reprisal later in the year.
Destiny 2: Beyond Light is now available on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
