A recent set of job listings by Electronic Arts indicates the company is set to start work on a new Star Wars game. While there isn’t much known about what this new installment in the popular series might be, the listings indicate this is a separate project from something like Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2. The company is hiring for work to be done on an upcoming mobile title.
Several different job openings were posted by Electronic Arts and assuming the listings are true and accurate, EA isn’t hiding its next Star Wars project at all. At the top of the list is an opening for a Senior Performance Software Engineer for mobile gaming. Other listings were far more explicit as far as the work that was going to be done on the mobile format. Electronic Arts is also apparently hiring for several Gameplay Software Engineers and Live Services Software Engineers. While the positions are spread out throughout the United States and Canada, the job descriptions are all tagged with “Star Wars Mobile.”
All of the job listings popped up in the last day or two, further hinting this is a brand new game rather than continued work on something like the upcoming mobile port of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2. Beyond the type of game these news hires will be working on, very little is known about what Electronic Arts has in store for this new game. However, the multiple positions open for a Live Services Software Engineer could be a hint that this is going to be a new MMORPG or some other kind of title with multiplayer functions.
Over the last few years especially, Electronic Arts has gone “all in” on its Star Wars licenses. The company has put out several different kinds of games in the franchise, as evidenced by the first Jedi: Fallen Order releasing last year and Star Wars: Squadrons that launched this fall.
EA also has plenty of experience when it comes to big multiplayers associated with this franchise. Earlier this year, the company admitted it wasn’t planning a follow up to Star Wars: Battlefront 2, despite that title gaining a strong following after some updates impressed critics in the gaming community.
Thanks in large part to the success of Disney+, the franchise is seeing a resurgence in popularity. Standalone games aren’t the only thing exciting fans, as there was quite a bit of hype surrounding the inclusion of The Mandalorian into Season 5 of Fortnite. With the Star Wars universe getting more shows on the streaming service, and more games planned for console, just what kind of Star Wars game is heading to EA’s mobile division is still very much an unknown.
