When one talks about some of the greatest gaming trilogies of all time, it’s only a matter of time before the Mass Effect trilogy comes into the conversation. The journey of Commander Shepard as he saves the entire universe from destruction — multiple times, no less! — is certainly one of the biggest highlights in gaming, and showed the very peak of what Bioware was able to achieve when they brought all their chips to the table. The studio might not have the greatest reputation right now, but there’s no denying the fact that the games they’ve made are still considered by many to be one of the greatest gaming titles of all time.
A big part of what made Mass Effect such a tantalizing trilogy was an incredible story spanning all three games that very much kept gamers engrossed throughout their journey in the shoes of Commander Shepard. For people who wish to relive this magic again through the medium of video games and get invested in another set of virtual characters once again, here are other story-heavy titles that will surely scratch this itch.
10 The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
It would be impossible to talk about story-heavy games without mentioning the masterpiece that is The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. There’s a reason why CD Projekt Red was put on the map with the release of this title — The Witcher 3 is nothing short of a narrative masterpiece, and any fan of quality open-world titles should definitely check this one out.
Of course, it helps that the combat and exploration in this game are truly sublime as well, making for a grand package that is entertaining in every way, shape, and form.
9 Cyberpunk 2077
Another CD Projekt Red game that should definitely be mentioned in this regard is Cyberpunk 2077, a game that has been anticipated for so long that most people would find it weird that people can actually go and play this game right now!
While the game might have its fair share of bugs, there’s no denying the fact that Cyberpunk 2077 is still nothing short of an absolute masterpiece when it comes to narrative storytelling in video games. The sheer branches of these narratives are nothing short of incredible, making for an experience that would satiate even the snobbiest video game connoisseur around.
8 Dragon Age: Origins
Of course, one simply can’t talk about the Mass Effect trilogy without mentioning another title that played a huge role in cementing Bioware’s path to success as well.
Dragon Age is one of the greatest fantasy gaming franchises around, with all three games in the series being excellent in their own way. Out of all these three titles, it’s Dragon Age: Origins that definitely has the best story of the lot and just feels like a quality title from start to end.
7 Final Fantasy VII Remake
For the longest time, people were extremely skeptical when it came to the Final Fantasy VII Remake. The original title is considered by many to be one of the greatest games of all time, which strongly implied that the Remake had some pretty big shoes to fill indeed.
Thankfully, not only did Final Fantasy VII Remake meet these expectations, but some might argue that it surpassed them as well. The focus on Midgar ended up fleshing out the plot to quite an extent and helped a new generation of fans get acquainted with Cloud and Co. as well.
6 God Of War
Santa Monica Studios had a huge task on their hands when it came to rebooting the God of War series. Gaming had evolved substantially, and it was infinitely clear that only a sublime gaming experience would do justice to Kratos and the franchise.
Thankfully, Cory Barlog and Santa Monica Studios blew everyone out of the water when God of War was released in 2018, cementing the franchise’s greatness once and for all with an upgrade that no one could’ve seen coming. Not only was the combat refined for a new era, but the storytelling itself had taken on a whole host of new emotions that would certainly keep invested throughout the entire title’s run.
5 The Last Of Us
The Last of Us is considered by many people to be one of the greatest video games of all time, and anyone who’s played the title can understand why this is the case. After all, there’s a reason why The Last of Us Part II was such a controversial title — the first title had told such a brilliant story that only a perfect narrative would’ve been accepted by the rabid fanbase.
The story of Joel and Ellie is an emotional rollercoaster that will keep fans on the edge of their seats as they go through some amazing combat and uncover each and every story beat with a ton of anticipation.
4 Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End
Another Naughty Dog title that showed gamers why buying a PlayStation 4 was the best choice they could’ve ever made, Uncharted 4 serves as the final chapter in the story of Nathan Drake and his ensemble… and what a chapter it is.
Uncharted 4 brought Naughty Dog’s development chops to the table and then some, crafting an incredible gameplay experience that was further augmented by one of the best stories ever told in a video game.
3 Deus Ex
Deus Ex might be a rather dated game when compared to some of the other titles on this list, but make no mistake — this masterpiece was a game that was ahead of its time when it came to both its narrative and gameplay, which were truly something wonderful indeed.
Any conspiracy theory nut will definitely enjoy Deus Ex, which deftly weaves stories of corporate sabotage and political espionage together into a delectable combination that will definitely keep fans satiated for hours on end.
2 Disco Elysium
Disco Elysium might look and feel like a dated CRPG, but the fact of the matter is that this brilliant indie gem by ZA/UM is anything but.
Taking on the shoes of a nameless detective with amnesia might sound like the most done-to-death concept in any medium, but Disco Elysium manages to build a truly stellar narrative upon this foundation that will make players question the concepts of politics, morality, the modern world, and everything in between.
1 Hades
It was only a given that a title by Supergiant Games would make its way into a conversation about great video game narratives. The studio has consistently been at the helm of pushing unique and quality storytelling in video games, and their latest game — Hades — is no exception to this golden rule.
A great quality of Supergiant Games is that all of their titles use a narrative that could only be possible within the medium of video games — something that Hades manages to pull off with incredible finesse.
