When it comes to trading cards based on video game franchises, Pokemon gets the most attention. However, Pokemon rival Digimon will soon be making its big comeback to the world of trading card games with the aptly named Digimon Card Game. Already available in Japan, the Digimon Card Game will have its English release date next month, so fans should start seeing booster packs and starter decks on store shelves.
While Digimon Card Game sleeves may already be available in some areas, Digimon fans will have to wait for January 29, 2021 to get their hands on the Digimon Card Game booster packs and starter decks. There will be three starter decks available at launch, each retailing for $9.99. The first deck is called Gaia Red, and it is themed after Tai from the Digimon anime and WarGreymon. There is also the Cocytus Blue starter deck, themed after Matt and MetalGarurumon. And finally, there is the Heaven’s Yellow starter deck, themed after Matt’s brother TK and Angemon.
As previously mentioned, all the Digimon Card Game starter decks cost $9.99, and they come with 54 cards, two memory gauges, and one booster pack. Booster packs will be sold individually for $3.99 and come with 12 cards that players can use to further customize their decks. A second Digimon Card Game booster pack will launch on February 26, 2021, for the same $3.99 price, and will serve as the game’s first major expansion.
If these initial Digimon Card Game products are a hit, one has to imagine that Bandai Namco will think about expanding on the game with more starter decks and the like. There are quite a few other DigiDestined children that could be featured in their own starter decks, ranging from other kids in the original Digimon anime series to those that appeared in later iterations of the popular TV show.
For now, fans can expect Bandai Namco to focus mainly on the original DigiDestined and Digimon that appeared in the first season of the anime. The first season of Digimon definitely seems to be the most popular iteration so far, as much of the franchise’s merchandise and products in recent years have revolved around it. In fact, the Digimon anime has even been rebooted to once again focus on the original cast of characters, a testament to their longevity and fan support.
When the Digimon Card Game comes out on January 29, it should help tide fans over while they wait for the next major Digimon video game. Digimon Survive was delayed to 2021, but when it comes out, it will be one of the more ambitious Digimon video games made to date. Whether or not it lives up to the hype remains to be seen, but Digimon fans will find out next year.
