10 Old-School World Of Warcraft Mounts That Still Turn Heads Today

For most World of Warcraft players, finding an in-game mount that matches a character’s personality and stands out in a crowd is important. There are some incredibly unique non-flying mounts in the game. Since flight still hasn’t been introduced to the new Shadowlands expansion (which is excellent, but does have its shortcomingsWorld of Warcraft players have been seen riding around on a wide variety of land mounts they’ve acquired since they started playing.

The menagerie runs the gamut from A (alpacas) to Z (zebras), and every letter, shape and hue in between. Some mounts are simple to get, while others require a great deal of effort. Either way, there’s something to be said for having a distinctive mount that turns heads wherever you go. If they’re unusual old-school non-flying mounts, that just adds to the appeal.

10 Camel

Camels are often referred to as “the ship of the desert,” but they look rather stately in every climate. In WoW, players can obtain five types of camels: white, grey, brown, and tan — as well as a specially-equipped Explorer’s Dunetrekker. The Dunetrekker is set apart from its brethren because it allows players to carry an additional passenger. This special camel is a Recruit-A-Friend reward given to WoW players who recruit a friend who subscribes for at least three months.

The brown and tan camels are acquired by purchase after a player has reached Exalted status with Uldum. The white camel is a reward from the WoW Trading Card Game, in the Tomb of the Forgotten set. The grey camel takes a little work, as the quest involves collecting randomly-spawning camel figurines from around the Uldum zone.

9 Rat

According to Warcraft Mounts, “years of chain-chugging in Dalaran’s sewer system have allowed him to grow large, agile, and shadow resistant.” Ratstallion is a great choice for those tricky Rogues, Warlocks and Death Knights, or any toon with a dark side. This natty rat came on the WoW scene with the Legion expansion.

To obtain Ratstallion, a player must farm Sightless Eyes in the Dalaran Underbelly until they obtain the Underbelly Tycoon achievement. He can be ridden at level 10, and cannot be traded or sold.

8 Rooster

A rarely-seen mount these days in the often-battle-ravaged realm of Azeroth is the elusive rooster mount, properly known as El Pollo Grande. He’s brown and golden, resembling the Rhode Island Red breed, and has a fowl fanny pack strapped on at all times. He requires a 150 riding skill and a player level of 20.

El Pollo is obtained by playing the WoW Trading Card Game, using the Fields of Honor set. Players who aren’t rooster fans (or are allergic to feathers, such as those on the Shadowlands’ majestic Silverwind Larion mount) have the option to sell or trade this mount. If one does appear in the auction house, it usually has a multi-million gold price tag. Once acquired, this feathered friend is account-wide.

7 Swift Lovebird

Is it pink? Mauve? Somewhere in between? Regardless, the Swift Lovebird really stands out in a crowd. It’s a flightless tallstrider with a prehistoric vibe, and moves much like a crane or ostrich would. It can be used at level 10 and is account-wide.

A rare bird, this majestic creature can only be obtained during WoW’s annual Love is in the Air festival, during the second half of February. It’s purchased using 270 Love Tokens, currency acquired by finishing daily quests during the event. Check out the World of Warcraft Holiday Calendar so you don’t miss your chance to own a Swift Lovebird next Valentine’s Day.

6 Mechacycle

Shaped like a giant gear, this mount really makes an impression cutting through a crowd or pulling up to a quest hub. Crafted, of course, through the mysteries of gnome innovation, it can be ridden at level 10, is account-wide, and is not tradeable.

To obtain the Mechacycle Model W, players must complete Mecha-Done, a rather lengthy chain of activities which includes exploration and deeds that require spending a great deal of time in Mechagon.

5 Skeletal Horse

Nowadays, having a horse as a mount in any MMO may seem passé, but an undead, skeletal horse certainly grabs attention parked at an in-game mailbox. These zombie steeds come with or without multi-colored saddle and trim options.

The particular Risen Mare pictured above is a fairly recent addition to the game. This bareback beauty is a rare reward from one of the Island Expeditions. These undead equines would pair well with a shifty Rogue or wiley Warlock.

4 Goat

If players are afraid of a little hard work, this mount may not be suitable.  Those who enjoy a little cooking and a lot of treasure hunting, however, should strap in for some fun in Pandaria!

Players can purchase Riding Goats once they become Exalted with The Tillers, a faction in Valley of the Four Winds. Most of the reputation quests and dailies can be picked up in the hamlet of Halfhill. Toons can also gain rep by working on their farm, which grows in acreage the more effort players put into it. Once acquired, the goats are account-bound.

3 Hyena

Currently, there are three types of hyena mounts available in-game. A special caravan-covered ride is only available to those who have unlocked the Vulpera race. The brown hyena, Dune Scavenger (replete with a side pouch full of bones) is a random drop from various critters on the continent of Vol’dun.

The pale Alabaster Hyena is a rare sight indeed. It can be purchased from Hoarder Jena in Vulpera Hideaway, Vol’dun, but only after reaching Exalted status with the Voldunai. Even though the requirements to unlock most of the allied races in WoW have been nerfed, the faction requirements to purchase special mounts has not.

2 Alpaca

These equine furballs are the epitome of cute. Alpaca mounts can be obtained from several sources. The Elusive Quickhoof requires that players run into this rare spawn in Vol’dun and feed it some Seaside Leafy Green Mix, available from BFA vendors. Its speed is dependent on your level.

The perky golden Springfur Alpaca is a reward from the quest Alpaca It In in Uldum. It also involves seven days of daily questing and harvested/purchased herbalism items.  Mollie, who questers will meet as they work their way through the Vol’dun storyline, drops from elite boss Dunegorger Kraulok.

1 Seahorse

Although not very rare, Seahorses in World of Warcraft are handy to have around when needing to travel long distances underwater. They can only be summoned once submerged and generally increase speed by about 60% — the speed of a slow land mount. This is super-handy for those classes who cannot breathe underwater.

The Subdued Seahorse drops from Poseidus, who can be found on Shimmering Expanse and Abyssal Depths. Another seahorse, the Vashj’ir Seahorse, drops for all who complete The Abyssal Ride quest, which occurs early in the Vashj’ir quest chain. Useable only in  Vashj’ir, he helps adventurers get around the zone much more quickly. A third in-game seahorse, Saltwater Seahorse, is an Island Expeditions reward and can be purchased with Seafarer’s Dubloons from Captain Klarisa in Tiragarde Sound.  Fabious, the hippocampus seen here, can only be captured through use of the in-game S.E.L.F.I.E. camera. The sheer variety of mounts in WoW is probably one of the game’s best features.
