Capcom Launching New Resident Evil Portal in 2021 | Game Rant

When Resident Evil launched on PlayStation back in 1996, executives at Capcom likely had no idea that the survival horror title would give birth to a franchise that would extend through console generations, find its way onto the big screen, and include a themed attraction at Universal Studios Japan. All that expansion has led to a number of websites promoting various aspects of the Resident Evil universe. Now Capcom is looking to consolidate some of those websites.

The Resident Evil franchise is one of the most enduring in gaming. New releases are still met with huge amounts of anticipation and hype, and classic games in the series are remade to critical acclaim. The upcoming Resident Evil 8 promises to include the best elements from all previous games in the franchise. But with so many properties making up the Resident Evil universe, it was time to clean up its cluttered online presence.

Starting early in the new year, five different Resident Evil focused websites will be pulled into a new Resident Evil Portal site in an effort to streamline how fans access the RE world. Moving into the portal will be Resident Evil.net, a couple Japanese Resident Evil sites, and the Resident Evil Ambassador Program. The portal promises to be a place where fans can stay up to date on all things Resident Evil, perhaps providing information to clear up rumors of a Switch Resident Evil game featuring Rebecca Chambers. The portal site will also be a hub for social media connections, allowing fans to share stats and connect with others.

While leaks and rumors tend to be how news breaks first in most gaming circles, having one place for official information will help communication between Capcom and fans. No doubt fans would like to hear if Shinji Mikami plans to return to the franchise, something he has said he would consider if he had total creative control.

The Resident Evil franchise is set to have a busy 2021 as excitement builds for Resident Evil 8 set to drop sometime next year. A leak of RE8 assets and story spoilers has revealed a significant chunk of the game, and is floating around online for those who want to know what the game will be all about. Less is known about other Resident Evil projects, like the RE4 remake and the Infinite Darkness Netflix series, so perhaps the new portal site will offer information on those upcoming projects.

2021 is the 25th anniversary of the franchise, so there are likely more surprises in store for the coming year. Fans will just have to wait to learn more about Resident Evil 8 and other RE projects, and a new portal site will help streamline that.
