Gal Gun Returns Xbox One Version Canceled Seemingly Over Censorship Concerns

Gal Gun Returns, the remaster of the original Japanese bishōjo rail shooter, has been canceled for Xbox platforms.

For those unfamiliar, Gal Gun is a game where the player takes on the role of Tenzou Motesugi, a sophomore at a Japanese high school who has been shot with several of Cupid’s arrows and as a result is so attractive that he has to keep the entire female population of the high school at bay with “pheromone arrows.” The game originally released in 2011 and had a PS4 and Vita exclusive sequel released in 2015. Gal Gun is being remastered in 2021 for its 10th anniversary with Gal Gun Returns.

In a new post from the official Gal Gun Twitter account, developer Inti Creates announced that the remaster will not be coming to Xbox platforms any longer. The post states that the final version of the game was already under review, and that the decision to cancel the Xbox versions of the game only came after “productive discussion with Microsoft.” The post goes on to say that that discussion helped the studio realize that it would be “unable to ensure consistency of experience across all platforms.”

While not explicitly stated, it appears that the post is hinting that Microsoft would have required the game to be censored in some way before it would allow it to be released on Xbox platforms. Many of the reply tweets appear to be in agreement that Microsoft wanted to censor the game, and that Inti Creates was not willing to compromise the content of its game. The Gal Gun series is known for featuring high school girls in their underwear, in addition to other content that some in the west may find strange or inappropriate. Though unlikely, the cancellation could be because of an issue with the game’s performance on Xbox.

What is confusing is that the original version of Gal Gun, which is what Gal Gun Returns is a remaster of, did release on the Xbox 360 in 2011. So, either Microsoft’s standards have changed, or some content in the game has changed. More confusing still is that the game is still slated to release on the Nintendo Switch, a platform from a company known for censorship, though the company has been less restrictive of third party content in recent years. The game is not yet been announced for PlayStation platforms.

Gal Gun Returns releases for Steam and Switch on January 28, 2021 for Japan and on February 12, 2021 for the US.
