The holidays are often a time for giving, and it’s no different for Twitch streamer Fairlight Excalibur. With the help of his community on Twitch, he made this Christmas even more special for one lucky person.
For those who may not know him, Fairlight is a full-time variety streamer on Twitch, and a big fan of storytelling. Fairlight can be found playing games from Mass Effect to Escape from Tarkov, and he even just played through Cyberpunk 2077. It was actually Escape from Tarkov that he was playing when he decided to continue his annual Christmas Pizza Tip tradition.
For the sixth year in a row, Fairlight collected donations from his community, which he would then surprise a random delivery driver with as part of a big Christmas tip. He is part of scores of creators on Twitch that think about ways they can make a positive impact around Christmastime. On Christmas Eve, Fairlight prepared again to livestream the gift-giving.
However, the only place open to order from this year ended up being a Chinese food place. When the delivery driver arrived, he made sure to get her permission before recording. Fairlight ended up gifting the driver $500 in cash, and another $3500 split across 7 checks. That’s not to mention the initial tip for the delivery itself. The driver, who is a single mom, was overcome with emotion at the gift. Fairlight even has to reassure her that it wasn’t a joke or prank. How the whole thing went down can be seen below.
The holidays, while a great time for happiness and gift-giving, can often be just as stressful. With everything that 2020 brought the world, it is probably even more stressful, especially for a single mom who has to work on Christmas Eve. On the bright side, Fairlight was able to make a huge difference in someone’s life through Twitch.
Streaming platforms have become a great way to make an impact. Take Jacksepticeye’s Thankmas campaign this year, for example. His campaign ended up raising over $4.7 million for charity, breaking records. Viewers love to donate to causes they believe in, and streamers are more than able to provide opportunities to do so. Across all streaming platforms, with channels large and small, streamers find ways to give back to the community.
Streamers aren’t the only one who have been invested in using video games and streaming sites to raise money for different causes. Various organizations are also getting involved themselves, from partnering with streamers to organizing their own charity events. Animal Crossing players were even able to turn spoiled turnips into real life meals for food insecure families because of a program Hellmann’s, the mayonnaise company, was running.
All in all, streaming can often be a force for good. Fairlight was especially able to exemplify that with his annual Christmas tip tradition. To his followers, he gives some extra Christmas advice: “Take it a step further, and help out someone less fortunate than yourself.”
