10 Story-Heavy Games To Play If You Loved Horizon: Zero Dawn

While the modern generation of gaming has had this medium of entertainment reach new heights unlike anything ever seen before, one thing that should definitely be criticized is the fact that most modern AAA developers have simply shied away from making new IPs that add some variety to the mix, preferring instead to stick to pre-established IPs in a bid to ensure sales.

This is what makes the achievement of Horizon Zero Dawn all the more impressive. Guerrilla Games did a brilliant job of crafting a new IP that allowed gamers to experience a new and diverse world that is full to the brim with intriguing lore, an excellent story, and some of the best heart-pounding combat ever seen in a video game.

The story of Horizon Zero Dawn is incredibly fresh, to the point where most people might feel the presence of a void in their life after finishing this brilliant title. Given the fact that Horizon Forbidden Woods is still some ways off, here are ten story-heavy games that will surely scratch the itch that this brilliant title left behind.

10 God Of War

There was a time when the story of God of War games served as nothing more than a contrived excuse to slash up as many baddies as possible. However, as gaming has evolved, so has this esteemed series, and one need only look at 2018’s God of War reboot to witness the extent of this evolution firsthand.

It goes without saying that God of War is easily one of the greatest video games of the modern generation, and any gamer worth their salt should definitely check out a game with a surprisingly engrossing and personal tale that really hits where it hurts.

9 The Last Of Us

Of course, it would be downright impossible to talk about games exclusive to the PlayStation without mentioning Naughty Dog and their vast swath of offerings, each of which has become legendary in their own right.

No other game personifies this best than The Last of Us, a title that focuses on the tale of Joel and Ellie in the middle of a zombie outbreak as they fight for their lives and humanity’s survival… or so it might seem.

It’s an excellent game, with a tone that serves as a stark contrast to another Naughty Dog IP.

8 Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End

The Uncharted series is considered by many to be the definitive exclusive for the PS3, and Naughty Dog decided to take things a notch higher with Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, which served as the perfect way to cap off Nate’s journey and end a brilliant franchise on a high.

Naughty Dog is truly one of the greatest developers on the PlayStation series of consoles, and one need only play this incredible title to understand why this is the case.

7 Parasite Eve

There was a time when Squaresoft’s JRPGs reigned supreme on the original PlayStation, with Final Fantasy VII paving the way for this genre to enjoy unmitigated levels of success on this particular console.

However, Parasite Eve was unlike any game that the company released on the console. For starters, it was way more mature than their other offerings on the console, making for a wholly unique experience that was fuelled by a narrative that, while somewhat complicated, still managed to keep fans on the edge of their seats right up until the very end.

6 Final Fantasy X

Of course, it would be impossible to talk about Squaresoft JRPGs without mentioning a series that has gone down in history as one of the greatest gaming franchises of all time — Final Fantasy.

The tenth game in the series is a great talking point, especially since it served as the final game under Squaresoft’s name before Square split off and merged with Enix instead. Final Fantasy X is a symbol of the series’ past, with a brilliant story and excellent combat spearheading the helm of a truly unique experience.

5 Final Fantasy VII Remake

Of course, it’s not like the Final Fantasy franchise went completely down the drain after Square Enix was formed — if anything, the resources that the company managed to gather helped them develop newer and fresher titles to modernize themselves with the times. Final Fantasy VII Remake is a great reflection of this.

The intense focus on Midgar has certainly helped flesh out the story and the city way more, leading to an experience that certainly pays its dues to the series’ past while simultaneously refining the story and gameplay for a new generation of gamers.

4 Prey

Immersive sims do a great job of getting the player involved in their titles due to a whole host of gameplay and design mechanics, and it’s only a given that these measures would also strengthen the story of said game as well.

This is what makes Prey such an excellent title — not only is the gameplay as immersive as can be, but it’s also compounded by a story that is genuinely interesting and keeps the player on the edge of their seats up till the very end.

3 Dishonored 2

Both Prey and Dishonored were made by Arkane Studios, who are certainly pioneers when it comes to making immersive sims with rich lore and interesting stories. Dishonored 2 is an excellent example of this, showing Arkane Studios at their absolute strongest.

The gameplay has already been refined enough as is, but it’s the story that has received a massive upgrade after the by-the-numbers plotline of the first Dishonored, making this sequel an improvement over the original in almost every department.

2 Arcanum: Of Steamworks And Magick Obscura

It would be impossible to talk about great stories in role-playing games without mentioning the whole host of CRPGs that have still somehow remained relevant to this day. Out of all of these titles, one game that has unfortunately disappeared from the limelight is Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura.

It’s a shame, since Arcanum has one of the richest worlds and deepest stories ever in a video game, getting players truly invested in their world with a character that genuinely serves as a true reflection of the player in every way.

1 Divinity: Original Sin 2

In the modern era, one might’ve assumed that CRPGs have pretty much become obscure and irrelevant due to the massive strides that gaming has taken since then. Well, these people have certainly never played Divinity: Original Sin 2 if that is truly their train of thought.

The fact of the matter is that Divinity: Original Sin 2 isn’t just a brilliant CRPG — it’s also one of the greatest video games ever made, in no small part due to its strong role-playing elements that complement a brilliant plot. Any fan of good video games shouldn’t miss out on this absolute gem, which is still criminally underappreciated to this day.
