It’s okay to admit if Fortnite started an interest in flossing! Video games and dancing are intertwined and there’s no denying it. Thanks to dancing games, the Nintendo Wii is still seeing a new release in 2020 because even gamers want to bust a move with their friends.
Players have been taking on games using a dance pad as a challenge for years. Thankfully, we don’t live in the world of Footloose, so fans of dancing games have many terrific choices to choose from
10 Space Channel 5
This one might be cheating but it’s too good to not include! Published by Sega for the Sega Dreamcast, Space Channel 5 is a rhythm game where players control space-faring reporter Ulala. They help Ulala imitate the movements and singing of her opponents which results in some killer dance sequences. It’s a game that is often forgotten but is so good it shouldn’t be.
9 Unison: Rebels Of Rhythm
Unison: Rebels of Rhythm is unsurprisingly a rhythm game but the gameplay is far more dancelike than something like Space Channel 5. Players essentially dance with their thumbs, using the joystick to move and wiggle to match arm movements on screen. The game takes heavy inspiration from J-pop, anime, and musical girl groups. This game has a flavor unlike any other and a story that will keep players engaged as they boogie down.
8 Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix
How could we not include this one? Nintendo is known for their amazing soundtracks so the opportunity to dance to their tunes is too good to pass up! Players can choose to play as Mario or Luigi to go through the game while dancing to amazing music from the Mario series.
This game is such a fan favorite that players have even figured out speedrun strategies for it. Plus the game has Waluigi as the main antagonist. If only he could bust out dance moves in Smash…
7 Pump It Up Exceed SE
The Pump It Up series of games originate in Korea and have one major difference compared to other games with a dance pad — a fifth button. The added button in the middle of the mat gives the game added charm though makes it difficult to play as it requires that unique controller. Pump It Up Exceed SE was the only major release for the series in the United States but is absolutely worth trying for any fans of dance games with the opportunity.
6 Dance Central
The Dance Central series has the best games that used the Kinect for gameplay. The original title in the series holds a Metacritic score of 82 and the soundtrack list contains some serious bops. Poker Face by Lady Gaga, Crank That by Soulja Boy, and even Funky Town by Lipps Inc. are all available to shake it to. It’s nice having one strong dance game where a controller doesn’t have to be held or stomped on.
5 Step Mania
Imagine a dancing game where anyone can put in and customize any song. Where Despacito and Kirin J. Callinan’s Big Enough can be found side-by-side. This dancing fever dream is Step Mania, a dancing game released under the MIT License so anyone can play it for free. The only real downside to the game is how hard using a gamepad with it is. Still, there’s no way to top the variety Step Mania can provide.
4 Just Dance 2018
It would crime to not mention the Just Dance series here. Every game in the series has been well received but Just Dance 2018 received the most praise from critics. The game simply tracks movement so well and has an even more killer soundtrack than the older titles.
There is no denying the Just Dance series currently defines the genre and is the most recognizable dancing game. When Just Dance 2021 is set to have the K/DA Song from League of Legends, it is bound to bring on the hype for the series into the future.
3 DDRMAX: Dance Dance Revolution 1+2
It’s too hard to separate these two games — both are equally fantastic Dance Dance Revolution titles. These games rocked the PlayStation 2 as well as arcades and back in 2002 were the pinnacle of what dancing games had to offer. Newer dance games just can’t bring on the beats like these old DDR classics.
2 Metronomicon: Slay The Dance Floor
This dance game not only brings on the gameplay dancing gamers are used to but also adds story and strategy. Slay The Dance Floor adds even more content to the original release while keeping the whimsy and RPG elements the original was known for. With new characters, passive abilities, and cooperative options for all modes of the game, this dance game has so much to offer those that play it.
1 Dance Dance Revolution
The original Dance Dance Revolution for the PlayStation 1 is undeniably one of the best games on the console. The game was originally known as Dancing Stage in Europe and absolutely pioneered the dancing game genre. Every game that came after takes inspiration from it as even to this day it still holds up as an entertaining title. Any dancing game fans that can still pop in the disk or try this one in the arcade should be sure to do so.
