There’s a lot to love about Mortal Kombat 11, and that’s not even counting the gameplay. In a game already full of colorful characters, the addition of more proved to be one of the best DLCs of the year.
Naturally, with DLC characters continuously releasing for Mortal Kombat 11, players are always wondering when the next batch will drop. Even more fiercely speculated upon is just who will be coming to the Mortal Kombat battleground next. After Mortal Kombat 9 set a precedent with the inclusion of Freddy Krueger, no one has been off the table, so long as they come from a sufficiently bloody franchise. However, there’s one character request that series creator Ed Boon has gotten more often than others, and it’s one of the strangest he can think of ever receiving.
Ed Boon’s enthusiasm for new Mortal Kombatants manifests itself in numerous ways, including, possibly, a recent Tweet that may hint at Reptile’s arrival. However, not every character requested finds their way onto the roster, and with good reason. Boon has received numerous requests for odd choices, but the oddest of all, according to Boon himself, is for him to enter the game. That is, to make Ed Boon, Mortal Kombat’s creator, a character in Mortal Kombat.
To Boon, this is a strange and somewhat disconcerting request. When requests come in for a classic character like Mileena, it’s easy to give players what they expect. The same is true for characters from violent franchises, or who are violent themselves. However, normal folks like Boon don’t make it into the MK roster on the regular, game creator or not. Boon stated that he did not want to put himself in the game, as he’d rather players not be looking for ways to cut his head off, even virtually.
To be fair, stranger things have happened regarding creators put into the Mortal Kombat franchise. The infamous Mokap was just someone in a motion-capture suit, and original MK sound designer Dan Forden’s “Toasty” is a series staple Easter egg. If anything, the series has been getting more expansive with its rosters and references, even announcing skins based on the 1995 Mortal Kombat movie.
That said, Boon’s reluctance is understandable. It’s clear he loves what he’s created and what it has become, and is content to revel in it alongside players. Having himself inside the game may invite the idea of him as a punching bag for Fatalities, an idea few people would be comfortable with. Players will just have to hope he makes a cameo in the upcoming Mortal Kombat movie this April.
