Wonder Woman 3 Is Already On The Horizon After WW1984’s Success

Wonder Woman 1984 may have struggled to perform at the international box office since its premiere more than a week ago, but it’s now clear that when Diana Prince rang the bell, America rushed to theaters. 2020 had seen a disappointing performance in U.S. theaters from most films, even from the few bigger ones that dared to attempt theatrical runs during the pandemic.

Despite Wonder Woman 1984 splitting movie fans between those that would opt to watch the film on HBO Max, whether they’d be new or old subscribers; or even with Patty Jenkins’ latest work struggling to keep the momentum from the positive early reviews it got, it seems like audiences were indeed starving for a new superhero blockbuster in 2020, something Warner Bros. is eager to make the best of in the future.

As reported by Variety, Warner Bros. Pictures chairman Toby Emmerich confirmed that a third Wonder Woman film is already planned for the future, also guaranteeing that both Gal Gadot and Jenkins would be back to wrap up the trilogy, in direct response for how “fans around the world continue to embrace Diana Prince, driving the strong opening weekend performance of Wonder Woman 1984.”

While Wonder Woman 3 had always been on the cards for the studio, the announcement comes on the back of a solid opening weekend that saw Wonder Woman 1984 tally at least $16.7m in North America ticket sales, which makes it stand out as the best premiere during the pandemic. Meanwhile, on HBO Max, nearly half of the streaming services’ 12.6 million subscribers had already seen the film, with more likely to do so in the future.

Adding up worldwide results, Wonder Woman 1984 has now collected around $85m, a more than respectable figure after only 10 days out in the wild, even if quite far off from the movie’s original billion dollar potential. When all is said and done, Wonder Woman 1984 should be able to make some profit from its $200m budget as well as maybe adding some subscribers to HBO Max and adding to its legacy the badge of honor of being the first movie to release in potentially revolutionary dual cinema and streaming premiere.

Wonder Woman 1984 is currently available in theaters worldwide and on HBO Max.
