Cobra Kai Cast Teases An Emotional Season 3 On New Year’s Day

The Karate Kid reboot’s third season is only a few days away now after Johnny Lawrence himself gave direct orders to move up Cobra Kai’s premiere from the previous January 8 date to New Year’s Day. For that reason, Cobra Kai’s cast has spent the past weeks promoting the show and teasing some of what’s to come.

One of Cobra Kai’s biggest achievements was turning the long-running internet theory and How I Met Your Mother joke that Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) was indeed the villain in Karate Kid and Lawrence was the good guy into a reality. Throughout seasons one and two the showrunners made sure to turn William Zabka’s sensei Lawrence character into a likable guy that audiences can root for and Larusso into quite the opposite.

However, as recent interviews with the cast suggests, Cobra Kai’s third season will probably deviate from that narrative by making Lawrence and Larusso work together for the greater good. As Macchio himself told The Hollywood Reporter, season three will dive into the origin stories of some characters in the series, especially the antagonists he and Zabka will go up against in the likes of John Kreese (Martin Kove).

As Macchio and his fictional Cobra Kai daughter Mary Mouser (Sam Larusso) put it, all this and Daniel’s trip to Okinawa make for a new and exciting way to arrive at the season’s conclusion with just the perfect unexpected build-up. Meanwhile, Zabka claims his favorite part of the show is his relationship with Xolo Maridueña (Miguel), as well as the amount of nostalgia and action the show brings to the table, with the latter apparently being guaranteed to excite viewers this time around.

Without spoiling any plot details, the Cobra Kai cast promises the show will bring even more of what’s made it such a hit since its first two seasons were picked up by Netflix and gave it much wider exposition than it ever got while it was on YouTube. That being plenty of teen drama, wrapped around a coating of 80’s nostalgia, great fights, adults behaving like children, and plenty of momentum to carry the conflicts that arise between the Cobra Kai and Miyagi-Do dojos.

Cobra Kai is available on Netflix with season 3 scheduled for release on January 1, 2021.
