Dragon Ball Z: Every Time Goku Turned Super Saiyan (In Chronological Order)

Just as much as Super Saiyan redefined Dragon Ball, it redefined Son Goku as a character. After trying to disconnect himself away from his Saiyan heritage in the Saiyan and Frieza arcs, Goku turning Super Saiyan reconciled who he always was – Son Goku, a Saiyan who was raised on Earth.

Alongside other characters, Goku would make the Super Saiyan transformation a staple of his skill set. Virtually every fight Goku participates in following Namek (if not every fight) features him turning Super Saiyan at some point. Dragon Ball Z just wouldn’t be the same without Super Saiyan, and neither would Goku.

12 On Namek

Dragon Ball’s stakes had never been so high before the final fight with Frieza. Across three transformations, Gohan, Krillin, Vegeta, and Piccolo struggled to keep up with Frieza, merely buying time for Goku to arrive. Unfortunately, even Goku proved ineffective, exhausting virtually all of his energy fighting a Frieza who was only at 50% power.

Everything Goku tries ultimately fails, including the Genki Dama. Exhausted and beyond his limits, Goku triggers into a Super Saiyan when he watches Krillin die before his eyes. Believing this to be the definitive end for his best friend, Goku gives into a primal rage that would change the course of Dragon Ball history.

11 Against Trunks

In Trunks’ timeline, Goku arrives in time to stop Mecha-Frieza and King Cold himself. Because he senses Future Trunks’ presence in the main timeline, however, Goku decides not to teleport and instead just waits out the rest of his trip. When Goku does arrive, Trunks takes him aside to both tell him about the future and test his power.

While Goku realistically shouldn’t be too much stronger than Trunks at this point, the time traveler is still impressed with Goku’s version of Super Saiyan. Goku can block Trunks’ blade (which he proved to be an extremely skilled swordsman with when he killed Frieza) with a single finger.

10 Training Piccolo & Gohan

After Trunks warns the main cast about the Android attack from his future, the Dragon Team spend the next three years training for the fight. Where Vegeta goes offworld (in the anime,) and the Earthlings do their own solo training, Goku trains with both Piccolo & Gohan. In both mediums, Goku is shown training in his Super Saiyan state. The anime features a proper skirmish between the three, whereas the manga simply has Goku sparring with Gohan & Piccolo on a chapter cover page.

9 Versus Android 19

With three years of training on their side, the fight against the Android should have been easy for the Dragon Team. Unfortunately, a combination of the butterfly effect and Trunks’ own misinformation make it so things don’t exactly go as planned – including Goku’s Heart Virus. His sickness doesn’t end up triggering until he’s in the heat of fighting Android 19.

Goku’s body can’t keep up with his heart, and it’s as if Super Saiyan only makes him feel worse. Goku is beaten into submission and completely unable to fight back. He only makes it out in one piece because Vegeta swoops in as a Super Saiyan to save the day.

8 The Room Of Spirit And Time

Goku spends quite a bit of time sleeping off his Heart Virus. When he wakes up, Goku reveals that he was able to figure everything that’s been going on through his “dreams.” Knowing just how powerful Cell is, Goku realizes they have no chance of saving the Earth if they don’t trainside the Room of Spirit and Time.

A harsh environment Goku couldn’t handle while training with God as a child, he takes Gohan with him to undergo 9 months of intense training. While trying to push Super Saiyan past its limits, Goku realizes he can make greater progress by turning Super Saiyan into his base form.

7 The Cell Games

Upon exiting the Room of Spirit and Time, Goku & Gohan come out as Super Saiyans – which they remain leading up to and during the Cell Games. Goku’s training ultimately paid off as he was not only able to master Super Saiyan, he trained Gohan into a considerably stronger martial artist than himself. Goku remains in Super Saiyan up until he sacrifices his life to stop Cell.

6 Feeding Yakon

Goku doesn’t have an opportunity to turn Super Saiyan in the Majin Buu arc until he’s fighting Yakon inside of Bobbidi’s ship. Rather than killing Yakon outright, Goku exploits the fact that his race consumes light, overfeeding Yakon by briefly triggering Super Saiyan 2. Unfortunately, this proves to be too much for Vegeta. What flash of power Vegeta saw in Goku was too much for him, immediately recognizing that his rival far surpassed him in the afterlife and triggering a mid-life crisis unlike any other.

5 Versus Majin Vegeta

After realizing just how strong Goku is, Vegeta allows Bobbidi to possess him. The possession doesn’t actually take, but Vegeta gets a massive burst in power that he uses to force Goku into a battle they can’t refuse. Now a Super Saiyan 2, Majin Vegeta goes head to head with Goku, desperate to prove himself his rival’s better.

In the end, Vegeta is forced to confront the fact that he isn’t this kind of man anymore. Goku reminds him of Trunks & Bulma – the family he’s built on Earth – and Vegeta quickly comes to realize that he needs to take responsibility for awakening Majin Buu.

4 The Stages Of Super Saiyan With Majin Buu

While buying time for Trunks to get the Dragon Radar, Goku goes to confront Bobbidi and Majin Buu. Rather than fighting right away, Goku takes Buu through the stages of Super Saiyan. Notably, this is the first time that the terms “Super Saiyan 2” and “Super Saiyan 3” are used in Dragon Ball.

Goku’s transformation into a Super Saiyan 3 proves so overwhelming that the entire galaxy feels his energy, Kaio included. Goku’s raw power is enough where he claims he could have killed Majin Buu right then & there, but Goku cuts off their fight so the next generation can protect the Earth.

3 Saving Gohan

Unlocking Gohan’s potential doesn’t quite go as planned. While Ultimate Gohan does prove strong enough to kill Evil Buu, Gotenks unfortunately falls for Buu’s trap and immediately gets absorbed alongside Piccolo. From there, Buutenks puts Ultimate Gohan in his place until Goku is forced to come back to Earth with the Potara earrings. Although he’s not strong enough to fight Majin Buu himself, Goku transforms into a Super Saiyan 3 to lob a kienzan at Buu and keep his son from getting killed.

2 The Final Battle

Considering just how powerful Super Saiyan 3 had been depicted up to the final fight against Buu, the fact Goku can’t so much as charge his Ki in the form when he has a human body proves to be quite the problem. Goku’s able to go head to head with Pure Buu at first, but it doesn’t take long for his Ki to start draining – and fast.

Vegeta fights Buu to buy some time for Goku to build his energy, but charging up in Super Saiyan 3 proves to be completely useful. Goku actually exhausts Ki while building up SSJ3’s power, resulting in him losing so much energy that he realistically can’t fight back anymore.

1 The Last Genki Dama

The final fight against Majin Buu is a group effort at its core that pushes the main cast to their very limits. Super Saiyan 3 proves to be useless against Pure Buu, Vegeta’s plan to get the Earth to lend energy to the Genki Dama doesn’t work until Mr. Satan intervenes, but even the Genki Dama proves too weak to ultimately connect.

Goku only manages to push the Genki Dama through and kill Majin Buu after his strength has been restored with the Dragon Balls. Tapping into Super Saiyan for the last time in Dragon Ball Z, Goku finished off Buu once and for all. Kind of.
