Insanely Expensive PS5 Console is Made of Gold, And Only One is Getting Made

It didn’t take long after the PlayStation 5 was revealed that mockups of potential custom PS5 consoles made their way online. Many of these custom PS5 designs are inspired by games for the system, like the Spider-Man: Miles Morales PS5, but others are much more extravagant. Russian company Caviar has released a mock-up for its extravagant solid gold PS5 console that is estimated to cost a staggering €1,500,000, or $1.8 million. And unlike some other custom PS5 designs, it is actually being produced.

As seen in mock-up images provided by LetsGoDigital, Caviar’s custom PS5 is created using 18-karat gold, with 30 kilograms of gold used to create the entire product. 20 kilograms are used on the console itself, giving the console the nickname “Golden Rock.” The rest of the gold is used on the PS5 DualSense controller, which not only has a gold touchpad, but grips made out of crocodile leather.

How exactly the PS5 DualSense controllers will function properly with a touchpad made of gold remains to be seen, though the console will apparently function just like a normal PS5 console. Based on the mock-up images, it seems to be a PS5 Digital Edition console that’s getting the solid-gold treatment, so the one person who buys it will need to keep that in mind.

Considering how insanely expensive this custom gold PS5 console is going to be, it’s not a surprise that only one is being produced. It’s essentially going to be an ultra-expensive collector’s item for one person to have, and it seems unlikely that it’s actually going to be used as a gaming console. Even so, it apparently will technically be able to function, as it’s literally a PS5 console covered in gold.

One potential hurdle is the heaviness of the gold and how it may impact the PS5’s functionality. Caviar is likely taking this into account when designing the console, but one has to imagine that the weight of the gold could potentially cause some issues with the PS5’s guts, especially if the console is placed horizontally instead of vertically. And if something were to happen to make the PS5 defective, one has to imagine it would be incredibly difficult to get it fixed.

There have been some PS5 defects reported in the first batch of consoles, though that’s not out of the ordinary for new console launches. This solid gold PS5 console will likely be thoroughly tested before it’s sold just in case, but that’s also something a potential buyer would want to keep in mind. Meanwhile, most gamers would likely be satisfied with a standard, non-gold PS5 console, though automated bots, scalpers, and supply chain constraints brought about the COVID-19 pandemic has made getting one especially difficult.
