Streaming for charity is a great way for large streamers like Jacksepticeye to generate awareness and money for a cause. However, for Twitch streamers with smaller communities, generosity may be harder to come by, especially in the aftermath of 2020. For Jack “CouRage” Dunlop, this presented a great opportunity to help spread some holiday joy.
CouRage is no stranger to charity streams. Earlier this year, on his 26th birthday, the Call of Duty streamer hosted a “CouRageous vs. Coronavirus” stream for the CDC Foundation that raised $250,000 in just the first four hours. By the end of his big 12-hour stream, revealed to be a tribute to his late grandmother, he had reached $503,254.
Tiltify, the platform utilized by CouRage for his April charity, got in contact with CouRage with the opportunity to send $5,000 to ten different charity streamers. Through the platform, CouRage visited streams across Twitch and YouTube, leaving each of the streamers in shock.
One of the most touching reactions comes around 14 minutes into a video about the donation spree posted by the Twitch streamer. CouRage donates to a veteran raising money for Mission 22, a treatment program for veterans with PTSD. The streamer, in disbelief, looks over at his wife and says, “He just shut the whole stream down.”
CouRage’s video does a great job to highlight the many smaller streamers raising money for different causes during the holidays. Even better, for some of the streamers, reaching their goals so quickly leaves them in awe, which is a heart-warming sight to see.
The collaboration between CouRage and Tiltify marks the ending of a holiday season that began with overwhelming support for charities overall. Facepunch Studios, the developer of survival horror game Rust, kicked off the month with a $80,000 charity donation for Movember, an organization aiming to raise awareness for men’s health issues, after creating digital Movember mustaches for players to purchase. Polygon also held a three-day, 56-hour event in support of the Innocence Project, an organization raising money for criminal justice advocacy. The news outlet surpassed its goal of $111,111.11, managing to raise $120,000 by the end.
These haven’t been the only charity events to take place on streaming platforms recently. Last month, US Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortex and Canadian MP Jagmeet Singh managed to generate $200,000 in a fun Among Us stream on Twitch. The uplifting sentiment promoted by all of these great endeavors to bring holiday cheer throughout the world is one clearly shared among content creators, both big and small.
