Resident Evil 7 Has ‘2020’ Easter Egg | Game Rant

The  Resident Evil franchise is well known for its Easter eggs. Capcom loves to add references to its other fame franchises, hidden among Resident Evil‘s shadows and secrets. But it’s quite rare for something to become an Easter egg unintentionally. And even rare for something to become an Easter egg post-launch due to unforeseen events that would happen later. Such is the case with what’s now being called an Easter egg in Resident Evil 7. It’s a book with the haunting title 2020.

The book was shared via the popular unofficial “No Context Resident Evil” Twitter account, which shares random images from the franchise day-to-day. “RE7 has a book named 2020,” was all that the account had to say about it, with an attached photo showing the 2020 book sitting on a dusty bookshelf amidst a dozen other books. Befitting the account, there’s no context for the book’s existence. None of the books seem based on anything available in real life. As such, the Resident Evil 7 book’s existence is rather haunting.

As for why people are latching onto the random book spine as a new Easter egg, the title rather speaks for itself. 2020 has been its own horror story for a lot of people across the world. It’s a fitting name for a book in a horror game. The fact that the game was released three years prior to 2020, seemingly predicting that the year would have dark connotations, escalates it from a funny coincidence to something quite haunting.

There’s nothing worth reading into with the 2020 book. At best, whoever created the original asset may have been trying to make an inside joke or create some ambiguous fearful feeling about the near future. Perhaps, if the Easter egg gets shared widely, someone can ask someone from the Resident Evil development team about it in an interview.

One other thing worth mentioning is that this isn’t the only time the 2020 book has appeared. Someone in the Twitter replies shared another image from Resident Evil 2 Remake showing the exact same bookshelf asset with the 2020 book included. Capcom’s reusing the book as necessary, likely having it included in its library of assets available for any use.

Perhaps the 2020 book will show up again in Resident Evil Village on a random bookshelf. Or perhaps Capcom will, without realizing it, add the book to a different game. 2020 was foretold in Resident Evil, and it may continue to haunt the horror game franchise for some time yet.

Resident Evil 7 is available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
