Genshin Impact players have been spending the latter parts of this month exploring the recently arrived Dragonspine region. The Cryo-themed mountain was officially introduced as part of the game’s highly-anticipated Version 1.2 update, and although it also helped debut several new mechanics, some of the game’s subtler existing features, like character birthdays, are not to be forgotten.
While the game has only been fully available for several months, Genshin Impact has already hosted a series of in-game (and web-based) events for players to enjoy, some of which are actually naturally tied to the game’s calendar. One such special event consists of the game’s playable characters’ birthdays, which are all commemorated by special in-game messages.
Players who login to Genshin Impact on December 31 will find a special message from Zhongli awaiting them in their Inboxes. It appears that the five-star Geo character’s birthday is on New Year’s Eve, and as such, he has sent players a brief thank-you note along with some items. Players may have received similar messages on Keqing or Kaeya’s birthdays, both of which were earlier this fall, if not one from Sucrose or miHoYo itself, depending on the day of the year. However, these messages only get sent if the player logs in on the day in question, so they’re just as easily missed as they are seen.
Zhongli reflects on the passing of years in the brief message to players, even mentioning that one of the best “variables” of this past difficult year was meeting the player themselves. Zhongli concludes with a polite invitation to go out on a stroll with the player, and just below that, players will find two small tokens of appreciation from Zhongli, the God of Contracts: one Slow-Cooked Bamboo Shoot Soup, and a Philosophies of Gold Talent Level-Up Material.
Slow-Cooked Bamboo Shoot Soup is Zhongli’s own Special Dish, which randomly has a chance of being cooked if using Zhongli to cook Bamboo Shoot Soup. Its effects are similar to that of other powerful HP-recovery dishes like the Black-Back Perch Stew (which Xiangling can cook a Special variant of), and players can even find a recipe for the real thing on miHoYo’s Chinese-language site.
The other item attached to Zhongli’s message, Philosophies of Gold, is a material used to level up certain characters’ Talents. Needless to say, Zhongli is one of these characters, and the four-star material is a bit tough to come by, so even the single one should be much appreciated.
Though Zhongli marks the final Genshin Impact birthday of 2020, Travelers can surely look forward to more birthday celebrations to come, especially if their own birthdays are coming up. All players will receive their own surprise gift on their birthday, so if anything, Travelers should be sure to give the game a quick login on their respective special days.
Genshin Impact is available now on the App Store, Google Play, PC, and PS4, and is currently in development for PS5 and Switch.
