One of the hardest issues to address in competitive gaming, stream sniping, is something that is hard to prove and can ruin everything from big money tournaments to friendly competitions in a small streaming community. Outspoken streamer xQc, who was banned from Twitch for stream sniping the Fall Guys Twitch Rivals tournament back in November, is now accusing others of stream sniping in Rust.
While cheats like an aimbot in Call of Duty: Warzone are relatively easy to detect, with the unmistakable snap to a player and landing only headshots immediately arousing suspicion, stream sniping is not as easy to prove. Instituting stream delays can mitigate the problem to some extent, but doing that limits how much a streamer can interact with their chat. Building a case that someone is stream sniping is difficult, and xQc’s claims that Myth, another popular Twitch streamer, was stream sniping him have been refuted with convincing evidence.
Rust has been enjoying a renaissance on Twitch recently, with several big name streamers picking up the game and diving into the survival sandbox. That increased attention, has brought with it an increased amount of drama. xQc is certain that Myth stream sniped him, following xQc to an out of the way location and killing him, fed directions from his Twitch chat. Some streamers on the server were worried that xQc’s presence on the Rust server would cause it to “implode,” and while it hasn’t yet, xQc has helped to create a more hostile environment.
After the accusation, Myth took to Twitch to explain just how he knew where xQc was hiding. Rust makes use of proximity chat, a feature where players near one another can hear each other if they are talking into their microphone. Myth was cruising along but stopped when he heard xQc “screaming” as proximity chat kicked in.
It is hard to tell if the streamers are just leaning into their online personas, or if the feud has generated some actual bad blood. Both the accusation and the response are laden with expletives, and the language suggests that the streamers aren’t fans of one another. Unlike when Dr Disrespect took a shot at xQc, where calling out xQc in a humorous way fits with the Dr Disrespect character, Myth and xQc may very well not be friendly.
This could all be part of the xQc show however, as the controversial streamer never seems to be far away from a new scandal. His tripping over DMCA rules for a clip posted to his Twitter account is the latest in a number of headline generating issues for the streamer. Stream sniping accusations seem to be par for the course.
