Apex Legends dropped a new trailer for the upcoming Fight Night Collection Event, officially unveiling the long-awaited heirloom for the battle royale’s resident walking fortress, Gibraltar. The trailer was accompanied by a laundry list of additional patch notes releasing alongside the event, which include new details regarding Pathfinder’s Town Takeover, the deployment of loot MRVNs throughout Olympus, and the latest limited time mode, Airdrop Escalation Takeover.
Gibraltar mains rejoice, the gentle giant of the Outlands is set to receive his own ultra-rare heirloom weapon when Fight Night hits servers on January 5. Players can obtain the steel battleclub utilizing Apex Legends’ heirloom shard currency or by unlocking all of Fight Night’s earnable cosmetics.
There is quite a bit of history behind the significance of Gibraltar’s heirloom, which has been referenced throughout Season 7’s Family Portrait comic series. According to the fourth comic in the series, Gibraltar’s ex-boyfriend Nik had the club custom-made for Gibraltar while they were together. This explains some of the weapon’s smaller details, like the green charm Nik calls “Little Mouse” and an inscription on the hilt that reads “BULA DR N.” “Bula” is a Hawaiian greeting which is used to wish someone happiness and good health, while “DR N” most likely is a signature from Nik.
Nik and Gibraltar clearly still care for one another despite splitting up after Gibraltar’s past actions landed Nik in jail. While the final part of the comic series saw the pair making amends, the serrated hatchet serves as a reminder of Gibraltar’s past mistakes and a promise to learn from them.
Gibraltar will be able to put his fire-infused heirloom to good use during Pathfinder’s upcoming Town Takeover. Respawn’s latest Stories from the Outlands short film highlighted Pathfinder’s origin story, featuring the inspiration behind the punch-happy android’s upcoming Town Takeover. Players brave enough to enter Olympus’ Fight Night arena will be prohibited from using their guns and abilities, forcing them into an all-out melee. The winners will leave the ring with plenty of rare equipment thanks to the “loot balls” scattered throughout the canvas.
The Fight Night Collection Event also introduces a new approach to limited time modes (LTM), beginning with Airdrop Escalation Takeover. Instead of having its own dedicated playlist like previous LTMs, Airdrop Escalation Takeover modifies the normal “Play Apex” game mode. Airdrop Escalation will feature the classic Apex Legends gameplay, but now supply drops will be littered throughout the map. As the deadly ring closes each round, additional supply drops will continue to land on the map containing increasingly better loot.
Newly activated MRVNs carrying loot of various rarity will now greet competing legends throughout the Olympus map. While players can pick up their loot with gratitude and leave their robotic friends in peace, the androids can also be shot to pieces to acquire their loot.
Fans of the intense battle royale can enjoy all of the new additions to the Apex Games after the Fight Night Collection Event goes live at 8 pm PT on January 5.
Apex Legends is available on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, with a Switch version also in development.
