Apex Legends Players Upset After Fight Night Patch | Game Rant

Some Apex Legends fans are beginning to push back against the latest patches, making claims that the game is beginning to lose the gunplay quality that players were originally attracted to. This comes alongside this week’s Fight Night patch, which has many pro-level players comparing the game to Blizzard’s Overwatch due to the new leaning that this latest patch is supposedly following.

Many of these complaints are coming from the pro community for Apex Legends, including Snip3down, a member of the esports team TSM, as well an esports coach, Ceryal. So, while many of these adjustments are intended to balance character abilities and overall gameplay, many of those who have become the most familiar with the basics of the game are finding Respawn Entertainment’s changes jarring.

The specific changes that have players worried involves the balance that will be nerfing Apex Legends‘ weapons like the Hemlock, while at the same time buffing a number of character abilities. This is a change that players are interpreting as a leaning towards abilities over gunplay, leading to the claims that the game is leaning away from being a battle royale version of Titanfall 2 and becoming Overwatch. As a result, the players who have been focusing on older metas that incentivized weapons and gunplay are finding it more difficult to continue playing with their preferred playstyle.

As for the Overwatch comparisons, this is coming from the way that Blizzard’s hero shooter and similar games like Paladins rewards players for focusing on abilities over shooting. While hitting targets and firing weapons is still an important part of the meta, ability use rises high above any weapon that any one character might be using. Considering the emphasis battle royales have on finding gear and gathering the best or newest weapons Apex Legends has to offer, leaning away from weapons can remove a large part of the gameplay loop.

Exactly how much this recent buff to abilities will effect the general play of the game is still up in the air, as players continue to tinker with and learn the new meta that balance creates. Additionally, Respawn is addressing some of the bugs that have been giving characters like Mirage hidden buffs in Apex Legends, which might hopefully keep the balance between abilities and weapons steady. However, considering that there is an entire community of players that are still looking to play a version of the game that is more in line with what they originally signed on for, the criticism does still have merits when commenting on the direction Apex Legends is moving.

Apex Legends is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with a Switch version in development.
