Red Dead Redemption 2 is a massive game, offering an open world where players can do just about anything. One Red Dead Redemption 2 player has proven just how much can be done in the world of Rockstar’s latest Western, as a full-length film centered on Civil Rights activist Ida B. Wells has been created.
While Rockstar paid homage to Western movies in the heavily praised story of Red Dead Redemption 2, one player has made a film of their own using nothing but clips of Red Dead Redemption 2 gameplay and original voice work. Created by Harrison Wade Reishman, the film is titled “Ida B. Wells: A Red Record.” Focusing on the highly influential work of the NAACP founder mentioned in the title, the impressive film serves as a great history lesson for gamers.
With games like the Civil War simulator War of Rights bringing one part of history to life, it is nice to see Reishman continue this trend by covering another part of the past in his film. Much like the 100-page document of the same name, the film pulls no punches in regard to its subject material. The original pamphlet that was published by Wells in 1895 helped wake Americans up to the issues of racism, focusing heavily on the topic of lynching. With black people often being hung without trial in Southern States, A Red Record became a major cause for change.
As such, Rieshman’s film retells the story of both Ida B. Wells’ early life and the publication of A Red Record. Clips of Red Dead Online are mixed with moments from the game’s main story, with the film including its own voice acting to help tell the tale of the historical figure. From imagery of graves and nooses to a powerful sequence at the end of the film where several NPCs can be seen reading Wells’ work, Ida B. Wells: A Red Record is an impressive showing of patience and creativity.
The voice cast for the film includes Bunmi Famuyia as Ida B. Wells, J. R. Starr as Reverend King, and Claudis Bridgforth as C.J. Miller. Mixing in the Red Dead Redemption series’ iconic font, Reishman’s smart blend of the game and real-life events makes for an effective final product. While some moments may lack the polish seen in the cutscenes of Red Dead Dead Redemption 2’s story, the film has plenty of heart and the work put into it is clear.
For fans of Wells’ work or history in general, the player-made film is a must-watch. Making full use of Red Dead Redemption 2’s spectacular visuals as well as several gameplay mechanics, Reishman’s work will be hard to top for any aspiring video game filmmaker.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is available now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions coming in 2021.
